All depends on what you are throwing, I live in TN and the hair jig is king here, for that I use a G Loomis BSR852 Glx, but in the summer we throw big 1oz to 1 1/2 oz spinnerbaits for that I use a G Loomis Spinnerbait Rod 864C a think of a rod as a golf club you would never go golfing with only one club it is hard to go fishing with only one rod.

As Chris W implied, it's not the target fish, it's the technique. Select

exactly the same gear you use for green fish based on the lures you

throw.  I fish live bait on a G. Loomis PR844S; soft plastics on a St.

Croix ES70MF; and jerkbaits on an Avid AVC66MF.

Like the gentlemen above, I agree with them. But so I don't just repeat them I'll add something...

If you are looking for a starter rod, a spinning reel on a 6'6 med-heavy rod can do most of the basics for you, and I find most people can learn that reel faster then a baitcasting reel.

You will find tho as you pick up more and more techniques you will keep buying more rods (and reels) to match your expanding game.

I love my medium heavy baitcasting set up. But its a ton of fun finessing softplastics and picking up smallmouths on a medium action spinning rod!

Best of luck bro

Because we wade the Susky for smallies, we can only take one rod. A 6 1/2' MF rod has always performed well with the range of lures we use.

Ideally, if one could carry a MLF, MF, and MH, you would have it pretty well covered.

My new St Croix LES70MF will be here Friday... it will get a workout on Saturday.

i use Medium and ML, 6'6"-7', fast and extra-fast. all spinning set ups.

i fish shallow with smaller baits so the heaviest lures i use are 5/16oz jigs and an occasional 3/8oz spinnerbait.

i think the lighter gear makes smallmouth fishing more fun.

if i used 3/8oz or heavier lures id prob bring a M or MH baitcaster. F for spinnerbaits, XF for jig/worm.

I use a 7 foot medium heavy fast action casting rod for most plastics, most jigs, swimbaits, topwaters, spinnerbaits, inline spinners, crankbaits and jerkbaits.

medium light fast action 6 foot spinning for small spinners, small jigs/grubs, and small plastics.

swimbait rod 7'6" casting for swimbaits

I'd say I do 90% with the casting equipment.
