bassnleo Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 Spent the afternoon on the Upper Allegheny River. Water temp ranged from 45-48 degrees and water level is up slightly from last time I was out a week ago. We had 4 inches of snow just a few days ago but it has melted off and air temps were in the high 50's today. We caught most of our fish in deeper water, 12-19 feet. I was convinced I could find a shallow jerkbait bite also, and we did. Deep fish caught on tubes and drop shot. Caught about 25 total between me and my partner. Couple of my friends were out also and they caught fish the same way. Nothing better than smallmouths this time of year! Enjoy! Quote

We all talk and compare notes on how we're catching them and on what. It helps all of us get on 'em. It's also fun to keep your lunker in the livewell then compare 'em all at the end of the day. Great fall smallmouth fishing and this will continue till December if the water does not rise too much or get muddy! Quote

I managed one nice one on a drop shot. saw alot of bait being chased but could not put the puzzle together. Quote

I was there all day last sunday fished mostly below the highland park dam . I managed one nice one on a drop shot. saw alot of bait being chased but could not put the puzzle together. E, depending on what your water temp is there, try a jerkbait. When water hit 50 here the jerkbait bite really turned on. I'm fishing the bait with 2 erratic jerks then killing it for about 3-5 seconds, then repeat. Still finding some fish on flats in about 5 fow but close to deeper edges. Make a long cast, real the bait down to it's running depth, then start the jerks. FYI, I also saw fish busting bait and went to the jerkbait, worked like a charm. Quote

It is pretty cool to look into the water and see a boulder that dwarfs the boat Quote

On the Susky we pray for fast rising muddy water in the late fall and winter. Its our best time for real bruisers. I have heard the mention of dreading high muddy water in here before and I am curious. For us the high muddy water stacks them in the eddy's, but, as I know all rivers are different so maybe the structure on your river is not the same. Again, good fish and glad you had fun. Sharing it with others on the water makes it that much better. Quote
bassnleo Posted November 19, 2008 Author Posted November 19, 2008 This river is far different form the Susky. Basically, this river is miles and miles of shallows with deep pool here and there. The fish migrate to these few pools to winter. The water in the pool is very deep and slow and even if the water comes up and gets muddy there are really no eddies to speak of. Muddy water turns these fish off and puts em' right on the bottom. Clear water in colder months has always produced better action. BTW, good to see you back. I had an opportunity to fish the mouth of the Susky on the flats this past Oct. Although my boaters did not venture too far up the Susky, it was cool. Definately an area I wish I could spend more time in. Quote
