SuskyDude Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Ouchigan, is what the Algonquin called the smallmouth bass. The English translation: "ferocious" I read that the other day, and felt the Algonquin nailed it right on the head. It also got me thinking about other nick names for the smallmouth. We've all heard: smallies, bronzebacks, brown fish, smalljaws, etc. Anyone got there own? My buddy and I have a few. For big smallies: Slammers, or Jammers. Which is fun because you can play around with them. For example, if you hook into a good one, you can yell "Jamma-Lamma-Ding-Dong!",or "Boom Slamma-Jamma!" (yell these when she makes that first jump for the full effect ) For really big smallies: Slam-Pig, or sometimes Pig-Beast or Donger. For midday, high sun smallies: Sunshine Smallies, or if the fishing sucks, Midday Miracles. For night time smallies: Moonlight Maulers. Yeah, we have time on our hands..... So lets hear them! Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted August 8, 2008 Super User Posted August 8, 2008 Largemouth are Green Carp ;D I like that, but I call 'em "Green Trout". 8-) Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 RW, As a smallmouth specialist, I was thinking you could give me a hand. Our streams are polluted with smallies. They're really making a mess of things, eating crawdads and baitfish intended for LMB. Normally I just toss them on the bank, or I might take one home to feed to the neighbor's cat. Any advice on getting rid of these problem fish for good? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 8, 2008 Super User Posted August 8, 2008 Use a large seine as a net. Dry them out and grind 'em up for catfood. No mess, no waste... : Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 ;D ;D ;D Well played. I do like smallmouth fishing, but around here they are only in streams and I've yet to catch one bigger than about 16 inches, so they aren't much competition for the green bass...yet. A year ago Kinkaid lake stocked smallmouth. This lake is deep enough and cool enough to support a muskie population in Southen Illinois, so I hope the smallmouth fishery takes off. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 8, 2008 Super User Posted August 8, 2008 Well, you're not far from Kentucky Lake, so plan on making it to the BassResource.com outing next spring (April 19-24). There is a very good chance you'll catch a big brown fish! Quote
