bugman Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Fished PIB today with my dad. We hit the main bay about 7:30 am but had to quit by 11:00am because a strong thounder storm blew in. All in all we had a good day landing 11 smallies, 6 largemouths and 2 rock bass. We caught them on a mix of lures from jerkbaits, lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, dropshot gobys & 4" jig&grubs. I would like to say thanks to Bassinleo for all his help. Your information was right-on. Quote
flyhatch Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 once you make the trip to the bay, its hard to go anywhere else Quote
BassinBoy Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Thanks for the info im going to PIB on saturday. Where did you catch them? How deep? Quote
bugman Posted June 5, 2008 Author Posted June 5, 2008 Thanks for the info im going to PIB on saturday. Where did you catch them? How deep? Because the wind was comming out of the SW at 15 mph we drifted with a wind sock from the middle red bouy from the main channel across the flat in front of the Perry monument. We started in about 15' and marked fish at about 5'. We caught most fish in areas that had a mix of sandy patches and weed clumps. Also caught some when we hit the 2 & 3 foot water near shore. The seam between different bottom colors held the most fish. I saw a few boats drifting the flat between marina bay and the Niagra launch. Good luck on your trip, and let us know how you did. Quote

Pond-Pro Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Thats cool, I was up on Presque Isle Bay too this past weekend! My uncle and I went up June 5th-8th. We seen a few boats drifting with wind socks, so I bet I seen you! We did alright, we caught about 70 over the trip. We got a bunch of smallmies, probably more smallmouth than largemouth! We caught them mostly on jerkbaits and spinnerbaits. I picked a few off their beds with a berkley beast. It was a blast! Heres is a pick of one of my nicer smallmouth: Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 9, 2008 Super User Posted June 9, 2008 That's a beautiful fish. Nice pic, too! 8-) Quote
xhogger1 Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 My dad and I boated 95 smallmouth on saturday and another 35 in a couple hrs on sunday. The fishing has been great the last two weekends. Quote
bugman Posted June 10, 2008 Author Posted June 10, 2008 It looks like this past week was the peek of the spawn season. How much longer do you think it will last? Because May was so cold do you think it will keep the smallies in the bay longer than normal? Quote
xhogger1 Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Water jumped almost 11 degrees in a week , I hope to get atleast another good weekend in. We did ok up till begining of July last year. Then switched to large mouths. I might try out in the main lake after this weekend. Quote
bugman Posted June 11, 2008 Author Posted June 11, 2008 Here are a few pics of some smallies my dad and I landed on PIB last week. Quote
Pond-Pro Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Bugman: Im not sure but I think the spawning is about over. We seen a bunch of empty beds. Nice pics by the way. Quote
Davis Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Here are a few pics of some smallies my dad and I landed on PIB last week. Awesome fish! That first one is almost as fat as it is long. Very very cool smallie. Quote
thetr20one Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Even though you catch them in the bay the true pigs are in the big lake. no doubt. Quote
reo Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Can you guys recommend some reasonable clean accomodations in the area that are boat friendly? Gonna have to make a trip up there!! Thanks In Advance reo Quote
bugman Posted June 15, 2008 Author Posted June 15, 2008 There are many motels on Rt. 20 and just before you enter the park. All are about the same. The tend to be older style one story buildings with exterior doors. most are clean but not fancy. They all have parking lots that will hold a boat. I can't remember the name but one just outside the park entrance advertised a fishermans special. There is a campground in the park but I'm not sure when th season starts. If you are looking for a holiday Inn Express type hotel you can find many near I-90/Peach street area. Quote

bassnleo Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 I stay at the Inn at Presque Isle. It is very close to the Penninsula and they offer a "fisherman's discount". All you have to do is tell them you are staying with them while on a fishing trip. It clean and cheap! Quote
bugman Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 Went to PIB on the 25th and smallies are still on the flats. Landed 8 SM, 6LM & 5 Rockbass. Smallies averaged 3# and LM 2.5#. Also had 7 or 8 other fish on including a N-pike but they shook off. Not a bad day for late june. Tried fishing humps & ledges but no luck. Quote
