Went out to the Quabbin Reservoir yesterday and landed this mama. She dropped the Rapala lip grip scale to 4lbs even and set the bar as my new smallie PB. I'm not even sure what my old PB was because it wasn't even worth weighing, so this one blows it out of the water.

Caught on a tube in about 10ft. of water. She didn't really put up much of a fight, I set the hook on her about 15ft from the boat and managed to drag her in pretty quickly. She was the only one I caught all day but she was big fish for our boat of 3 guys, out of about 10 fish landed. The other two guys had a good day number's wise, pulling in decent 2-3lbers all day, but what a feeling it was to land this baby.

*EDIT* here are two more pics i just had emailed to me, they show the color and size of the fish a little better i think...

You got love those PBs.

Nice fish indeed!

It's funny how sometimes you hook into a fish and by the way they fight at first you think it must be a biggun, but then it's just a regular 1-2#er.

i know exactly what you mean, but with this one... i knew she was a biggun from the second i set the hook on her.

i was dragging the tube along a rocky bottom off a point and felt her hit it, and as i set the hook i followed my line into the water and all i could see was this big white belly turn on it's side and then take off for deeper water. she came up right behind the boat and that was my first good look at her, but just from seeing that flash of white when she rolled after the hookset i knew she was gonna be a PB for me. when i got her in the boat the other two guys kept saying "that thing's gotta be a 6lber, it's gotta be!" but when i put her on the scale she definitely read 4.00 steady. they were surprised she wasn't bigger, i was surprised she was SO BIG!

i'm just hoping i get a chance to top her this coming weekend, boy that'd be nice!  8-)

Beatiful fish Mike  :)

(I finally visited this site from home where photobucket isn't restricted  ;) )

That was a tough day for us, couldn't find anything really. Did you guys have electronics on your rig or were you just estimating? I really want to go back there and give the place a fair shot.

Congrats

we didn't have any electronics that day. he does have a fishfinder for the boat but i guess it doesn't work, so we just went to the spots we know usually hold fish, and once we got on a decent pattern we just stayed with it and managed to pull a few out.

next time you head up let me know, i'll show you a few spots to hit so hopefully you can land a few good ones.

Very nice fish, I'm jealous!  Did you measure its length?  The reason I ask is because my son caught the largest smallie he ever caught last evening and we measured it at 18". Have no idea of the weight though. His didn't fight much either.  BTW, I jealous of him too! ;D

Congrats.

Great job on the Q!  :) Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I'd like to share some observations on the Q with you. Conditions there are pre-spawn to spawn right now, with the water temp at 54 degrees. We hit it on Sat., 5/24 and did pretty well ourselves. The wind was heavy from the NW and kept most boaters hugging the shorelines and coves - and going fishless! These smallies definitely require an "on-bottom" presentation this time of the year. And if you find bait balls in the area you're fishing, anchor and your golden. The fish we caught were on offshore structures in 25' - 35' of water. We used tubes, drop shot, senkos and even tried some hard jerks (which didn't work out btw). My buddy had the hot rod on Saturday with 8-9 smallies between 3 and 4 1/2 lbs., along with several smaller fish. Walt maxed out with a 3.9 salmon (only fish we kept for the day; all others were released as usual) and a 5+ lb. laker to boot! I only got 4 good bass and a couple of dinks. Here's some pictures of Walt's fish:

And here's a couple of mine:

Walt was busy fighting the laker, which is why I had to fend for myself with that photo!  :)

Another decent smallie with me in the picture this time:

Quabbin can be a perplexing body of water, but it's also one the finest in the northeast.

nice! that's pretty much the exact pattern we were hittin em on that day, it's just too bad we didn't figure it out until later in the day. we didn't have any electronics to help but it certainly would have made a difference. those are some fine fish my friend!

i hope to get back out on the Q soon but i'm pretty busy the next few weekends. i might try for a half day next saturday or go out all day sunday, but my buddy joe wants to take me to some reservoir out near westborough or something. him and my sister went out on sunday and caught almost 30 smallies ranging from 1-3lbs so i'm looking forward to that!

anyways, congrats on the good day out and thanks for the great pics!
