lostriver21 Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Like the title says I am new to smallmouth fishing, I was planing to go to my local river and give it a try. What kind of lures should I use. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 15, 2008 Super User Posted May 15, 2008 Welcome aboard! Read through the pages in this section, there are probably fifty pages of lure suggestions. Two of the "standards" are grubs and tubes, but many other lures will work as well or better, depending on the situation. While you are researching lures, pay close attention to suggestions on where to fish. Location is more important than any other variable, current is #2 and goes hand-in-hand with where you need to be fishing. 8-) Quote
xXspartanhunterXx Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 I love to use mepps, blue fox, panther martin spinners. usually with a tail. green, chartrues or firetiger colors. Quote
bigmountaineer Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Crawfish replica crankbaits are a good investment Quote
lostriver21 Posted May 15, 2008 Author Posted May 15, 2008 So these spider grubs I keep hearing about is there a specific color I should be using Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 15, 2008 Super User Posted May 15, 2008 Most of my soft plastics are watermelon with black flakes or black with blue flakes. I'm not convinced color is all that important, but I like "dark". 8-) Quote
Sharkbite Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I agree dark natural colors work best. I was fishing a 3'' trick stick the other day had a few stricks on brown and swiched to a light green with white belly and I got nothing so RW is rite. Hey RW I got the * and I was trying them out for the first time. I fished them weedless & weightless the bait did nothing but sink slowly it look like a green turd LMAO I started think of you then and the thread we had about the bait in current. But this was in a lake what should I add I had a 3/0 Gama EWG should I add weight? Also were can I order those hooks for the Brush Babys? The ones with the weight built in on a off set worm shank. I also got the double tail grubs as well do the need weight you think or try weightless first. So it dosn't matter how I use the grub as long as its slow? Is this correct? Quote
dgquail Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 TRy to stick with a couple of natural colors. You may want to flip a few rocks over and see what color the crawdaddies are. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Super User Posted May 19, 2008 1/8 oz. plain jig head (size #4 or #2 hook) dressed with a 3" chartreuse w/sparkle, single curly tail grub. Rig the curl in the same direction as the hook. Cast up & across current so that your jig swings into current breaks or eddys. You will catch bass! Quote
