I had a slow day, only catching 3 fish. One was about 15", another was 3lbs. 0oz, and the third was a new pb! Michigan has this stupid law where from the 25th until the saturday before memorial weeked, it is catch and immediate release for bass. There were a bunch of people around, and i didnt want to get in trouble by weighing it and not releasing it right away. It would have been a 5lber, if not extreamly close to it. Pics will be up in a few days.

Nice catching! I'm pretty sure you won't get in trouble weighing a fish.Long as you release it right after.Just can't keep it.

I hate to tell you, but that "stupid law" is probably the reason you caught a decent smallie like that in the first place.  It is put into place to protect them during the spawn.  In northern Wisconsin it goes until like June 14th, and in some lakes it is a 21" minimum length with only 1 over 24".

It preserves the fishery during the spawn, and there isn't a fish easier to catch on a bed than a small mouth.

Take care and congrats.

Well im all for catch and release, i dont think ive kept a bass in about 3 years, and i do agree the law is in place for good reasons. With my luck, i would be the one that gets in trouble for a delayed release, while some other guys are keeping 10" smallies, which are both undersized and out of season. You see this every day! I try telling these people, very few listen, others claim its a rock bass or a warmouth, and refuse to listen to logic. Now we bring a rulebook that has the laws and pictures of fish every time we go down there.

Awesome!  That's a great sized smallie.  I bet it put up one hell of a fight when you latched into it.  My PB smallie was a river smallie and it felt like a giant catfish!

Hey Rocknfish,

Congrats on the catch!  And just be thankful you can at least fish for bass now.  Here in Minn. bass season does not open until May 24.
