Phishin Fillip Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 So today since classes at tech were canceled because of the anniversary of the shootings I decided to get off campus and go fishing. It was a very productive time when I went to the big falls area of the new, chilled on a rock and kept casting into the large rapid letting my gary yamamoto double tail hula grub or zoom super fluke tumble down it and slowly retrieving it. It was very really nice to be able to spend a day like this doing something I loved. After about 2 hours I had hooked into 12 smallies. 5 of the 12 were real little guys and 4 were pretty nice pounders with my best being probably around a pound and a half. Thank God for the little breaks from real life he gives us Quote
hawgchaser Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Thats what its all about! I had been away from home for 5 weeks working and was about to lose it. I found a local pond near the city I was working in and went to Wal Mart and bought a cheap rod. Luckily I had just ordered a code and happened to have it in my car. I bought some line, 1 pack of yum dingers, 1 pack of strike king tubes and fished from 5 until 8. It absolutely renewed me and made the rest of the week great! Congrats on a good trip. Quote
Phishin Fillip Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 I fished Big Falls which is right on the edge of Giles County about 20 minutes from Radford in Virginia Quote
Phishin Fillip Posted April 18, 2008 Author Posted April 18, 2008 hit the same spot this morning and got 16 more Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 18, 2008 Super User Posted April 18, 2008 you are so lucky, man. I wish I went to school down there, I would fish the river all the time. It's so beautiful down there and they have so many smallies. At JMU, I have the SHenandoah and the South and the North rivers all nearby but I'm pretty sure all of them have felt the effects of recent fish kills. I can still catch fish, but not like the New, I'm sure. If only I had started fishing seriously before I decided what school to go to! I could have used fishing locations as an added factor of deciding where to go! Quote
Phishin Fillip Posted April 18, 2008 Author Posted April 18, 2008 yeah I know what you mean man. If you decide to make the trip over here within the next two weeks i can show you where ive been fishing for them. I just got back from catching another ten by the way. The only thing about the spot I go to is just about every fish I caught around the rapid was in the 10 to 12 inch range and only 3 of the 26 I caught today were around a pound. It was still some serious fun though. This morning I forgot to mention that I hooked up four times in four casts in a row. First time I have ever experienced anything close to that. I did fish this same spot in the same way for just about an hour on tuesday and the only thing I got was a nice three pounder. Also, I got a nice visit from the game warden this morning. Thank God I still have another 6 days left on my license ;D Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 19, 2008 Super User Posted April 19, 2008 Yeah, I was just out on the river, I managed to catch one that was about a pound. Have you ever fished the Parrot (Parrott?) area? I went wading there last summer on Craw's recommendation and me and my friend both hooked up with big fish but we managed to lose both....It was a nice wading spot though. Quote
Phishin Fillip Posted April 19, 2008 Author Posted April 19, 2008 Thats right across the river from where I fished except you can get to more spots from there because the road stays in contact with the river. It does look like a really good wading spot from what I could see. I waded to a rock yesterday in the middle of the rapid (which was cold, stupid and dangerous) but there were plenty of bass there. I may have to hit up the Parrott area in august when I come back for school and the water will be warm. Quote
