BassinBoy Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 I have caught some nice Largemouth on Rapala DT Crankbaits and was wondering if they would be a good lure to try for smallies. Have any of you guys caught them on these crankbaits. What worked. Thanks Quote
smallieking Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 yea they work i caught them on DT 6s alot but the last time i went out i was throwing a DT22 on some deep riprap and only caught 3 largemouths no smallies Quote
fishizzle Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Thats funny, I also use DT6 and catch smallies. Not a great bait for them though---few and far in between. In deep water I would prefer a dropshot rig, jig or texax rig The DT22 may work well under perfect conds. like deep structure with a rock pile. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 31, 2008 Super User Posted March 31, 2008 My best fish on hard baits have been caught on jerkbaits. Otherwise, soft plastics are the most productive class of lures. However, smallmouth can be caught on any class of lure, including crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and topwater. When the bite is strong, experiment! 8-) Quote
fishizzle Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Thanks RW, thats what I meant to say You are so well spoken and to the point Quote
Super User 5bass Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 Some of the biggest smallmouth I've ever caught have been with a DT16. Plenty over 4#, several over 5#, one over 6. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 tell you the truth i don't own any. around here when i target smallmouth there are four things i have tied on a white spinnerbait, a tube jig, a shakey head worm, and the most important a lucky craft jerkbait (usually two lucky craft jerkbaits ;D) Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 Some of the biggest smallmouth I've ever caught have been with a DT16. Plenty over 4#, several over 5#, one over 6. That has been my experience also, large fish but no average sized smallies. I fear you may be selecting for larger smallies when using a DT16. I think a deeper diving Bandit may produce more quantity of average sized smallies. Quote
Super User Tin Posted April 3, 2008 Super User Posted April 3, 2008 Lots of big smallies around here come on deep diving cranks. Why not, as long as it gets down to them. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted April 4, 2008 Super User Posted April 4, 2008 Smallies will nail a DT16, even 14 inchers. You might not catch the numbers on that size of crank that you will on a smaller crank or jig, but it will still catch smallies. I've caught smallies on 7" jerkbaits and giant buzzbaits over one ounce when fishing for pike, including some not much bigger than the lure. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Yeah smallies definitely are not afraid to eat something as big as them Quote
MarVaBC Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 I actually tied my PB smallie this weekend on a DT16 in craw color. 20" and 4# Bouncing it off rocks in 10-12 feet of water did the trick Quote
