tntitans21399 Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I guess next time bite him back. I've never been bitten by any fish. I caught a couple of Hybrid Bass and they are very strong and they don't like to open their mouth and you have to force your finger into their mouth and then they will open. But I've never had one bit at me. If the hook is in their mouth where it might hook me if they wiggle, I will grab them with a grove around the body so I can have a good grip of them and get the hook out, but no bitting from them. jaystraw Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I love it when they bite...makes them easier to lip and get out of the water. It can surprise you, but I've never been hurt by it. It only hurts when a hook in their mouth stabs me while they are trying to bite me. Quote

tipptruck1 Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Never bit by a smallie. But I did get bite by a 10lb cat. That really hurt. Quote
pondhopper Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 My worst bite? The day I learned why mangrove snappers are called snappers. The little bugger got me about six times before I could get my finger out of there, he was like a machine gun. Then again, everything in Florida bites. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 I swear this really happened to me last summer, I was getting my limit of smallmouth out of the live well and when I reached in for them one jumped up and bit my thumb- didn't hurt I just busted up laughing- my co-angler didn't see it but laughed to- I have never heard of this happening and probably never will experience it again- I would have never brought this up but this thread was my calling! bassasin Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Bitten by a smallie, never - stabbed by a treble hook while trying to lip land one, often :'( Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 16, 2007 Super User Posted December 16, 2007 When you are thumbing them, they will just lock down on your thumb, then you have no skin left on your knuckle. Smallies are just mean creatures. Quote
CaptDoug Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Bitten....quite often. Usually by the smaller, spunkier ones....2lbs or under. They seem more willing to clamp down and shake than the bigger ones. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 18, 2007 Super User Posted December 18, 2007 Hey CptDoug! Welcome aboard! 8-) Quote
fishinnstudyin Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 I've been bit by channel cats. Its okay to put a hand in a flathead but channels hut. I've also been bit by a northern pike. I had my hand on his belly and another on his tail. I just went to toss him over and give him a quick shake in the water and he went and bit the hand that was holding onto his tail. luckily he got my rough knuckle and it didnt hurt as much as scared me. still made me bleed a bit though Quote
Danarchy Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 You have'nt been bit by a fish untill one of your digits ends up in the mouth of a Northern Pike. I don't think they really mean to bite, they're probably just thrashing in an attempt to free themselves from the clutches of the strange being that pulled them from their world. I was removing a Mepps inline from a small Pike and he did just that and I ended up gettin' bit and the small tooth broke off in my finger. I also dropped the fish which led to a break off and the loss of my spinner, not the best outing. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Those aren't bites, those are kisses, they just do it a little differently ;D Quote
Super User Micro Posted January 12, 2008 Super User Posted January 12, 2008 I bet my brother-in-law he couldn't lip a bluefish. I lost. But he won't do it again Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I bet my brother-in-law he couldn't lip a bluefish. I lost. But he won't do it again I took a friend to the hospital who had a mishap with a Bluefish. Put your finger in the mouth of anything over 6-7 lbs and you'll have 1 less finger. Not just a cut up one,....a missing one. Quote
WV_Eagle Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Had smallies bite me...hurt a little but surprised me more than anything. Lipped a walleye once...raked my thumb up pretty good...nice and bloody. Won't do that again.... Quote
Yakfish Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 yesaterday i caught a nice 2.2lber and he bit so hard i dropped his ***....it actually hurt..... Smallmouth are dangerous. Be careful if you snag one over 5 lbs, you might lose a hand! : Yeah, that would really suck. Quote
stepchild Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I get what you guys mean by them clamping down on your thumb while lipping them. As a member wrote, it's often the smaller ones that are more troublesome. Funny story though. My cottage lake only really has stocked trout, rock bass, perch and smallies. In the morning, you can see lots of little smallies looking for food in the shallows. Without thinking about it, I just decided to go for a soak and drift off with some water noodles to keep me afloat. Within 5 minutes, something tugged at my nipple!! I look around and there's this cloud of mini smallies swimming around...those little buggers are ferocious!!!! Quote
