The new world record caught?

I think this has been discussed before on here, but if that fish is a world record then that guy must be 9 feet tall with HUGE hands.  The fish doesn't look any bigger then 6.5 lbs to me.

Yeah I heard about this one and it really bothers me. There is absolutely no way that fish was close to 12lbs. In my neck of the woods a 22" river smallmouth will typically be from 4-5lbs, maybe a little more in the colder months. A 22" lake-run fish will often be considerably heavier but not close to 12lbs. Even just by looking at the pic it's obviously not nearly that big.

What does it take to start "world record" buzz? Do you just catch a nice fish and tell a reporter it's a record and then they just believe you? The writer who inked that story should be fired. Next month someone will probably catch a 10lb largemouth and eat it then claim it was a record, then somebody will write a book about them.

At first glance of the pic it does look like some kind of record fish. However when I looked back again I noticed he was holding the fish way out to make it look bigger. The moral of the story is that if you catch something you think is a record to get it certified. I dont think it is a record though from the measurements that he gave. From those measurements I cant see any way it could be over 8 pounds at most.....

If thats a world record then I caught my state record back in March!! Pass it on ;D. Seriously, lokks to be 6 to 7 lbs. Still a shame he ate it. It might have been a world record one day.

The handy dandy fish calculater here in Bass Resource with the lenth of 22" and girth of 25" gives a EW of 11.86lbs. It sure does not look like it in the pic. Like RW said, " The bottom line.........

it only looks to be around 6 - 7 to me and possibly 8 but thats wayyyyy pushing it, WAY pushing it.  It does suck that he ate it but hey not all people think like us so......the only thing I think is truely outragous about it is that he ate the fish, and still tried to make it a world record, cmon the fish was gone!

Look at the size of the guys fingers compared to the fish. That thing MAY weigh 4 pounds.

The formula for bass; length X length X girth divided by 1200 = weight in pounds. I have weight hundreds of largemouth bass over 10 pounds using this formula for nearly 30 years and never measured a bass with a girth exceeding it's length. Smallmouth girths rarely exceed 80% of their length.

If the bass was 22 inches long, 80% of 22 = 17.6

22 X 22 X17.6= 8,518.4 div by 1200 = 7.09 pounds

22 X 22 X 22 (100% girth) = 10,648 div 1200 = 8.87 lbs pounds

22 X 22 X 25*= 12,100 div by 1200 = 10.08 lbs

* 25 inch girth reported.

The 7.09 lbs is within 5% of the bass shown in the photo, IMO.

If the figures were transposed where 25" length and 22" girth

25 X 25 X 22 = 13,750 div by 1200 = 11.45 lbs. The photo of the bass clearly shows it isn't 25" long.

This topic has been talked about non stop. It's quite obvious that fish is not even over 5lbs.

If you're going to lie, at least catch a fish that looks close to 10lbs.

It is no doubt a nice fish but 12 lbs i think not.This guy is admittedly not a bass fisherman and has definetly overestimatd the size of this fish.The reporter in the story did not do their homework and the storyshould not have been published.This guy is obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed but he is does not represent the average Canadian angler we have some great fishing in Canada and some great fisherman as well so i think the statement made by brush pile berry is unfair and uncalled for.I am sure that the U.S. has just as many morons per capita as Canada has.That being said the chance of the next world record coming from Canada is not that great because of our short growing season,our bass live longer than those in the lower states but grow much slower.Thats all from me got to hitch up the dog sled team and leave the igloo for a bit to go to the store EH!

Canadian/ American relations go back too far to get jazzed up about a silly swipe. The same comment applies to guys from anywhere "you and I are NOT from"   :  and  is certainly no more "derogatory" than Texacan's and Okies taking a few jabs going into this weekend's "Battle Of The Border."

BTW,

In this region of the country (Mid South), we are way ahead in "morons per capita"...way ahead! We have some "extras" if you need one.

Wow why would that even get any media attention at all, thats definately not the WR, don't get me wrong its a good fish but why would he even try and say that fish is the WR
