local pond, can't find smallies

i know there are tons of smallies and largies in a local pond but i just can't find the smallies, i pull out at least 3 lm over 2 lbs and 1 pike over 3 feet ever time i go.

BUT where are the smallies? i see millions of smallie fingerlings in shallow coves and places around islands

Maybe things are different in your area but I have always been told that smallmouth will not flourish in water that has no movement or current.  Depending on the size of the pond your talking about this may be your problem.  Are you positive that its small mouth fingerrlings that your seeing??  I know  that several years ago I put a few small mouth in a pond nearby and have never seen them since.  I have fished it regularly for several years.  never seen another sign of the smallmouth.

yes i am sure, they look like lmb finglerlings with lots of spots, i even saw a smallie maybe 6 inches long. and the place is pretty big, used to be a reservoir and has a discharge of some sort.

iv never caught a smallmouth in a pond ever around my way.....and i used to do quite a bit of pond fishing when i was younger....

Is there any moving water in the pond that you can see?

I agree with the other guys in that I have never heard of any smallies in a pond.

You catch smallies in a lake or a river with moving water.

However, with that said, nothing is impossible so keep trying.

Can you drop shot or use a hair jig?  What about a tube?  Small grub? Silver Rat-L-Trap?

I guess your will have to "swim" your baits to try to locate a smallie.

Yeah I haven't ever heard of smallies flourishing in a pond before. Especially with LM and pike in there.

But ya never know.

Ponds in your part of the country do indeed hold smallies sometimes. If the pond in question supports big pike then it can surely hold smallmouth bass. I think maybe the term "pond" is throwing some people off, I know in New England a lot of people call moderately-sized lakes "ponds".

I would just try to find rocks and/or deep water to start out. Maybe try using a drop shot rig with a small plastic just to see if you can locate some smallmouth, whatever the size, and then go from there. Also if you can get out there when there aren't alot of other people around your odds of hooking one will go up. Once you catch one I'm sure the rest will come easier. Good luck!

agreed, i saw a pic of a "pond" on here and it was bigegr than my lake

yes this "pond" is about half a mile wide and 2 miles long with coldwater discharge, large pike (caught a 5 foot 1 yesterday, what a fight!) native, lake, rainbow,brown and brook trout. Lots of bluegills, white perchs, loons, kingfishes, beavers, 6lb largemouth, i am sure there are some smallmouth in here.

First of all, you shouldn't mention that you're fishing this place illegally.  There have been some heated debates on this subject, so let's leave that alone please.  And I would check your local trespassing laws.  I know MA is so F'd up I wouldn't doubt jail time if you were caught.  I didn't think it was a huge deal when I was fishing a similar place to what you mentioned until I researched the laws and actually realized there's possible jail time for this action in CT (not that anyone's ever been given jailtime, but it's possible).  The moderators are understandably vehemently opposed to trespassing for fishing, but I would definitely check out your state laws before doing it again.

Anyway, wherever you're fishing, if the water is clear, throw a white suspending jerkbait around rocks and you WILL catch smallies.
