cjensen Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 So far this year I've caught my PB largemouth (6.2 lbs), walleye (7.5 lbs) and now I get to add a smallie to the list. The local bass club I'm in had a two day tournament on the Mississippi River pool 10 last weekend. Caught this bruiser at 6:15 am while fishing a black buzzbait over wing dams. Nothing compares to catching smallmouth on topwater. When she hit the buzzbait she shot straight outta the water and was about 3-4 feet in the air. Ended up weighing 4.70 lbs at weigh in and was 20" long. She was the biggest smallie of the tournament by 2 pounds and only .08 ounces smaller than the heaviest largemouth. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 10, 2007 Super User Posted August 10, 2007 That's a beauty. Congratulations! 8-) Quote
sodaksker Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Awesome fish!!! There is nothing like catching those river smallies. I believe they fight harder than smallies caught in a lake or reservoir. There is no quit in them, and they love to go airborne. Congratualtions on that catch. I have my river tourney coming up in 2 weeks. I hope to catch one like that. Quote
Bizzo Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Great fish! Where on the Mississippi were you? What state/town? Quote
cjensen Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 This fish was caught in Pool 11 of the River, right around Guttenberg Iowa. Quote
Bizzo Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Sweet! I grew up in DeWitt Iowa, about 20 minutes from the river. Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Excellent fish! Congratulations!!!! Quote

Nice smallie I fish out of pool 10 and pool 9. Did you fish the tournament out of Marquette last weekend? There was 3 tournaments out of pool 10 this last weekend so its been getting fished pretty hard. Quote
justfishin Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 cjenson, I am old and set in my ways as to smallie fishing but, I always keep myself open. It interest me greatly as to the lures and technique different regions use. For instance, Rw, FishCris and some others adjust to the type of water, locations, tactics and baits used for their smallie fishing in their perspective regions. How about a low down of what you guys do in that part of the Mississippi River. I think we all would be interested. Quote
