BassinSoldier Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 At what water temp do smallies spawn at? Im from Florida originally and live up in Kentucky noe so I am still kinda new to catchin the bronzebacks. Thanks! Quote
Jnamo Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Are you wondering so you can avoid fishing for them during the spawn? I hope so. ;D Quote
ABA CAST CHAMP 2006 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 According to the latest fishing reports here at KY Lake, the smallmouths are spawning right now on main lake pea gravel banks. The water was near 65 degrees when the reports of spawning smallmouths came in, but with the recent cold fronts and the water already back down to 60 degrees on the main lake, there could well be a 2nd good spawn of smallmouths. BassinSoldier Posted April 8, 2007 Author Posted April 8, 2007 I'll be up on Kentucky Lake for the whole weekend of the 13th. I hope that the smallies come back in on the pea gravel by then since the weather seems to be getting back to normal by then. So 65 degrees...I have a couple good spots down below the 68 bridge that I think will be pretty good for hittin the pea gravel. Thanks for the heads up ABA! Quote
stratosdriver Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 If you plan on fishing spawning Bass you have to consider why these fish are there the Males are there protecting the nests and removing these fish leave the nests vulnerable to predetors and you can catch the same fish over and over.I myself try to target other spieces when the bass are spawning but that is your call. All i have to say is when you catch them put them back as soon as possible so they can get back to their job and move on and try not to fish that spot again. The females are not there for long but when they are you should handle them gently and get them back in the water as soon as possible Quote
Jnamo Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 To further what stratosdriver was saying- not all fish spawn at the same time. If you find fish on beds (a spawning flat) go backwards to the first drop off and you should be able to find pre or post spawners. You can catch them without harming the smallie population. Just a thought, Jeff Quote
