The intersting thing about smalljaws is that they are not as hardy as largemouths, they just don 't seem to thrive in warmer environments, there are no smallmouth that I know below San Antonio, lakes like Amistad and Falcon do not have them even though they have stripped bass, I 've been to Choke Canyon in TX several times and never seen a smalljaw.

Along the Atlantic seaboard, smallmouth bass range as far south as northern Georgia.

At that, Georgia has only a couple of lakes like Carters Lake, that support

a marginal population of bronzebacks.

I don't know the answer out west, but in the Southeast you can basically draw a line from Little Rock, AR to Atlanta, GA and that is the line, give or take a hundred miles or so.
