Need the scoop on smallmouth

When it comes to smallmouth I'm not the greatest in locating them, choosing the right type of bait. What types of structure, breaks, points do they tend to migrate too? Also what lures work the best?

I'm 99.9% sure Im going to st clair at the end of the month so I'm gathering as much intel as I can.  I've been reading articles and all the posts I can find on smallmouth.

I wont be fishing St Clair strictly so I need a rough guideline on what to look for.

To me tubes work real well on them. For jigs all i do is put a lead jig in the body of the tube. The deeper the water the bigger the weight. To work a tube cast it out let it sink to the bottom. When it hits to bottom rise the tip of the rod so the tube comes off the bottom. keep doing this intill your to the boat or shore. Minow sticks baits work to. But it seems like the rapla xrap they love the most. Cast it out real a little a bit then jerk and let it sit. The smallmouths around here seem to attack it on the pause.  so have a great trip.

It's my understanding that St. Clair is a fairy shallow lake so any breakline you can find should produce. In the end of May you will probably encounter, pre, post and spawning fish. From what I've read and heard about the lake, tubes are hard to beat, soft jerkbaits, and topwater, spinnerbaits, are good choies.

I've also read that certain ares of what are called pencil reeds can be good.

St. Clair and breakline not in the same sentence you drive out 5 miles it's 8 ft drive another 3 miles it's 9.5 ft, 3 more miles 11 ft. and you catch 2 lbers everywere. Get your self some smoke/purple Chomper tubes and hang on 1/8 or 3/16.

The river is wild need a little heavyer jigs if you get out in Erie the Smallies will still be shallow less than 20 ft.

Im not sure what the water temp is there, but remember that smallies spawn in cooler water than LM  and there beds are generally deeper, but they are fairly aggresive on their beds

Smallies are also more current oriented than LM.

Smallmouth LOVE anything that resembles a crawfish!
