Super User eyedabassman Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 I am not a big crankbait guy.But I want to do more of crankin so any info would be great! Best time of year? The bass up here will start to spawn about mid to late May into the end of June and I know that that is a good time to go crankin but, what about the rest of the year? As the summer moves in do you put your cranks down and pick up the jig and plastic baits? Thanks Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 All year around. I will cast a crank (lipless And lipped) from the time the ice melts until the time when it starts to ice up. I only go to soft plastics once it is obvious my cranks won't catch fish. I guess I'm backwards from most fishermen. Quote
BARON49_Northern NY Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Lipless crankbaits are the first lure I use as soon as the ice is gone and the last lure I cast once the water is close to turning to ice. The rest of the year I move from shallow runners during the spawn, mid depth divers during post spawn and finally to deep divers once the fish move from post spawn to summer patterns in deep water. Super User Raul Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 In Wi ? well, your water gotta be in liquid form for starters. Down here ? from Jan 1st to Dec 31st you can crankbait all you want. Quote
bigtimfish Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 honestley i fish them year round. when the fish are off deep dropoffs, and creek channels, i will throw a crank. now im no expert by any means but its produced. ive had some trouble this spring doing that though. in south texas cranks work no matter the time of year. it may not be true to where you fish though. also lipless cranks year round too. xcalibur rayburn red from dec to june. Siebert Outdoors Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 My general rule is Lipless high 40's Cranks 50's Thats the magic temp for me. Not perfect and yes you can catch them in colder temps but that is where I see a bigger difference in catch %. Quote
Daniel A. Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I throw them year-round. As the water heats up in the summer, I'll throw them deeper. Once I pick up a couple on the crank, I'll pick the area apart with a jig or worm. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 I fish them pretty much all year. Shallow cranks when bass are shallow or in the mornings, deep cranks during the day when it's hot. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 If the ice is gone, I'm cranking. Falcon Quote

What I don't have alot of faith in is the deep divers. I have a bunch of deep cranks like DD 22's, and so on. It just seems like I would waste the better part of the day when I could have been fishing jigs and worms. But again I want to be better at crankin and for sure the deep water crankin. What deep cranks do you like? Dan Quote
