lucasbass25 Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I'm just stsrting out fishing jigs I want to know what the best combo is? like size, color, and shape of head. Quote
CODbasser Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 start out with small jigs..1/4 ounce or 1/8 ounce with zoom chunks the jrs... cant go wrong with green pumpkin or penut butter and jelley same for the trailors....using the small ones will get u more bites and you will be able to learn how they feel when they hit them...net bait and berkley make good chunks too...just use what looks good to you...as for jigs i like booyah and hotshot...but the brands will vary depending on the takle shop you are at...we have alot of local guys that make jigs and they usually have a good idea of what works...so try the ones from you local companies..just make sure they have a good hook in them.. Super User Catt Posted April 19, 2009 Super User Posted April 19, 2009 What's the best jig n trailer? The one on the end of my rod & no you can't have it There is no such animal as The Best, there are personal favorites The most popular size by volume of sales is 3/8 ounce The most popular color by volume of sales is Black-N-Blue The most popular head by volume of sales Arkie Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted April 19, 2009 Super User Posted April 19, 2009 GMAN's Widegap jig is an excellent all around design. There are better choices if you think you need to fish in really heavy weeds but it will work great everywhere else. Quote
bigfruits Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 the most productive (for me) and cheapest jig i can recommend is the strike king bitsy bug. id get the 1/4oz in green craw color and use a matching 3" craw trailer. maybe yum craw papi, netbait paca craw or eakins craw. this will catch bass of all sizes. Super User cart7t Posted April 20, 2009 Super User Posted April 20, 2009 The nice part about jigs is you don't have to break the bank to fish them. I would personally start with some 3/8oz in a couple colors like Black n blue, brown and chart, etc, in a couple different head styles from different manufacturers. Whatever color turns you on really. This time of year I would personally advise the use of pork trailers but for a newbie they can be a pain to maintain during a day on the lake. Start with some chunk type plastic trailers or craws. Again, go ahead and pick colors you like. Then start fishing them. You'll find which ones work best for you as you go along and then your next time to the tackle shop will be more informed. One thing about jigs, the fish you catch are usually nicer fish. Quote
Tanker4lyfe Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 ID GO WITH A RAGE CHUNK OR BITE A RAGE CRAW TO SIZE Quote
EastTexasBassin Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 This is my number 1 jig by far. I have a half dozen of these in different sizes ready with trailers in my box all the time. Its a booyah boo jig with a flappin hog trailer. I always have one tied on. If the green pumpkin one isn't getting hits I'll switch to a black and blue version of the same thing. The skirt is kinda bunched up because I went a little overboard with the Megastrike. These days I just put the megastrike in the grooves on the 'flaps' and 'paddles' of the flappin hog. Works great and stays in there for a long time. Keeps the skirt open and full looking too. Quote
STK001 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 No one that I've seen has recommended the Uncle Josh #11 trailer in black...this has been a producer for me. I can't understand why anyone would use plastic over pork...any good arguments for plastic that I'm not understanding? I see a lot of it being used so there must be. Enlighten me guys. Quote

Enlighten me guys. you dont have to keep plastic in a jar, plastic does not dry up on your hook if you leave it layin out, pork trailors are only available in a few shapes, sizes and colors, plastics are available in hundreds of shapes, sizes and colors...plastics are cheaper... plastics are alot cleaner and easier to deal with...pork is better in some situations i suppose, but i have never found myself in a situation that i only had plastic and was wishing i had some pork... just my opinion though...by all means if you catch bass on it and you dont mind the hassel...use it.. FunnyFish Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I love evolution jigs from Megastrike. Bobby is on here all the time. For trailers I use Berkley chigger craw. Peanutbutter and jelly , and black and blue for jig and trailer colors. I started with the 1/2 oz. Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted April 21, 2009 Super User Posted April 21, 2009 As for my jig I like the Chompers fin. jig with the paca chunk! Quote

I suppose I have used it for so long that I don't see the hassel though it is annoying to start catching fish like I did on Sunday on a spinnerbait and forget that the jig and pig are just laying there for an hour..by then the pork is crisp, time to throw it out...that sucks. So you do think that plastic produces just as well? I swear the action of the pork has gotten me strikes and caught me some monster fish. I am going to try it. I do own some chigger craws and craw papi's...I'll get some of those paca's...keep hearing that name. Thanks. Good luck to you guys! I'd love to get out this week but the Eiltes are in town for the Blue Ridge Brawl..if anyone is close to Smith Mountain you should come to the weigh in's! Quote
