fittsfish Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Hi all, My name is Mike Fitts and I live in Akron Ohio. My home lakes are the Portage Lakes and I do get up to Lake Erie quite often in the warmer months. I haven't really fished a whole lot. Just really learning the advanced stuff for myself and for my eight year old who can already outfish me by a country mile. I've been taking him fishing since he was three but I think it's time for both of us to be movin' on up to the next level. We're gonna try out some local tournaments this summer and see how we do. Thanks for lookin' Mike Quote

Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 17, 2009 Super User Posted February 17, 2009 Hello welcome to the forums. I am from Barberton, originally. Sure the Portage Lakes have some decent fish, especially Long Lake but are extremely pressured and a bit overrated.Did you know that the best kept secret in the entire area is the Ohio Canal? In particular any part of the stretch between BF Goodrich on Wilbeth Rd. Carnegie Blvd. near the old closed down Youngs resturant on Manchester Rd and Nesmith Lake all contain some giant fish. Most people do not mess with the canal due to the heavy weeds and general swamp like conditions. Weightless worms, buzzing frogs, and spinnerbaits in the cleaner areas around pads are king. During the very close and upcoming spawn walk the towpath with flipping stick in hand and look for bedders. i have caught countless 5-6 lb fish in spring especially in the section from Manchester Rd. east through Kenmore and down into Barberton. It is a slop fishing paradise! Quote
