stinkfist Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Hi Guys, I've been fishing since I was a kid. Probably about 30 years. Almost all saltwater though. Recently I found out that a small creek on the back of my property has small bass and bream in it. I've been tearing up the bream with crickets and grashopers but I'm having a little more trouble with the bass. The bass are all in the 1-2 lb range and i let them go when i catch them. So far i've landed about 4 bass on black worms and gotten a soft frog bait torn up but have not hooked one yet on it. The creek is about 20ft wide and varies in depth from about 2 ft to about 5 ft. Water is crystal clear and I see bass all the time. Some spots it pretty fast moving and others its fairly slow. It's actually completely in the woods and there are tons of trees both over the creek and in it. Lots of things to get hung up on. I got in there today and got some of the bigger stuff out of one of my spots. I've got about 100 or more yards of this creek on my property and there are a lot of changes in this distance. I need some advise on the best way to fish this creek. What kind of baits can I use that are not easily snagged? how do I work these baits? Someone told me that bass love live gold fish, Any truth to this? i'm useing a little shimano spinner rig now and I like it ok but I'm thinking of picking up a baitcaster combo. Any suggestions on a decent combo under $100? Thanks, Mike Quote
Super User Marty Posted June 29, 2008 Super User Posted June 29, 2008 Someone told me that bass love live gold fish, Any truth to this? I wouldn't know, but it sounds very plausible. However, many states have outlawed the use of goldfish as bait, so check your regulations first. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted June 29, 2008 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted June 29, 2008 add a trailer hook to your frog...and maybe a drop shot rig Quote
RLinNH Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Do you Fly Fish? If so, Try a Hopper Pattern over the slower moving portions of the Creek near boulders and other Cover. Especially this time of year. A hendrickson Pattern in a size 2 Hook would be a good bet also. Quote
skillet Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Won't be much help with a small CLEAR creek . Here in the Mid-South the "water is usually to thick to drink and to thin to plow". Use SEARCH, there have been lots of discussions on combos for that price. WELCOME to the forums!!! As Ever, skillet Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted June 29, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted June 29, 2008 Throw a Texas rigged plastic - Senko, tube, worm, Brush Hawg, etc. Work it through the cover and watch your line for the strike. I'd also work a Pop-R or buzzbait across the laydowns. A 1/8oz white spinnerbait burned just under the surface could be a killer deal as well. I wouldn't advise live bait. You run the risk of introducing a non-native species to your stream, which could really harm the fishery in the long run. Best be safe and use artificials instead. Welcome to the forums! Quote
Big-O Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Give it the variety that Glenn listed and I bet you come up with more fish and more fun Welcome to the forum! Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
packman Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 i would try some small storm bait (shad) or a beatle spin.maybe a road runner these work in my local creek Quote
fishbear Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Creeks usually have crawfish in them,,,,maybe a jig with a craw type trailer, fished in and around any and all rocks. Quote
Daiwa Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I just got back from a very clear lake. We were using Gulp 7" Turtle Back in a green color. Worked very well. BTW, welcome aboard! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 29, 2008 Super User Posted June 29, 2008 Welcome aboard! 8-) Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted June 29, 2008 Super User Posted June 29, 2008 WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On a small creek I would down size every thing. 5'6" spinning rod medium action. 1/8 oz. spinner baits. shallow diver crank baits. plastic worms(4 to 6 inches). Quote
stinkfist Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 Hey guys, Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll try them out and let you guys know what I found. I'm Going to try a lake up the street from my house within the next week or so. Looks promising. I hope to get to catching some bigger fish soon. Do you Fly Fish? If so, Try a Hopper Pattern over the slower moving portions of the Creek near boulders and other Cover. Especially this time of year. A hendrickson Pattern in a size 2 Hook would be a good bet also. I have thought about trying fly fishing over the years but then I think about having to buy all new gear and having a whole new addiction. Besides there is no way I could cast a fly rod in this creek. Way too many tree's around. It's hard enough to cast my worms and frogs. I Do get them hung up every now and then still. Thanks again, MIke Quote
