Goonie Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 And I am hooked. Pun intended 8-) I grew up in the city, Chicago but have moved further north and reside on a private lake. I've been fishing for the past week, every dusk. Have caught and released about 20 so far Average size about 12". I'm gonna be posting some newb questions, so bear with me : If they are 12", should I be eating them or releasing them so they can bulk up ;D How do you guys estimate weight? Do you guys carry around scales? I have been using a floating jig and soaking it in one of those bass attracting sprays, do people frown upon those sprays in the fishing world? Can I fish at anytime of day? Or is morning and dusk the best times? I'm addicted, love hooking those little guys and watching them pop out of the water 8-) Quote

wareagle83 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Welcome!! Dawn and dusk are generally thought to be the most active times of the day for a bass similar to the whitetail deers movements. Cruising the shallows at dusk and throughout the night while remaining in the shallows in the early morning. If you can't or don't care to fish all day, the evenings and mornings are great times to be fishing. I have a Berkely digi. scale I picked up at Wally World for 20 bucks or so. Works great. I practice catch and release on all my fish but if you care to harvest the bass you catch, be sure they are legal to keep as dictated by your state or lake's legal size limit. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 23, 2008 Super User Posted May 23, 2008 How Y'all Are? Q: If they are 12", should I be eating them or releasing them so they can bulk up? A: We have a resident pond biologist so my suggestion would be to ask him. Q: How do you guys estimate weight? Do you guys carry around scales? A: I do not guesstimate I carry scales Q: I have been using a floating jig and soaking it in one of those bass attracting sprays, do people frown upon those sprays in the fishing world? A: I do not worry about what people think I use techniques that work for me and that includes the use of sprays. Q: Can I fish at anytime of day? A: You can fish any time of the day or night Q: Or is morning and dusk the best times? A: A widely held misconception is that big bass feed only at night, or at dawn and dusk. This is simply untrue; in fact, you are very likely to find large fish feeding during the middle of the day. Lunker bass can only bigger by feeding more often and eating more than other fish. They are more in step with the ecosystem, and have to be, in order to be first in line. They are the first to respond to such circumstances as the cloud cover before an approaching storm, the migration of shad to and from open water (usually occurring during mid-morning and mid-afternoon), or even the daily and monthly effect of the moon. Sharkbite Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Hey bro welcome, sounds like you have it made living on a lake. But for me I support catch and release b/c you never know that fish that you fry one day could be your first 10lb plus. Or better yet a record holding bass. For me it's all aout the fun and enjoyment. I've used sented, salt injected and non sented and they all work great. Personally I love the *** from ***. They carry all the colors that you'll need and are very stand up guys. I like to say that they are bait made for fishiermen by fishermen. That is the way it should be and thats thet way they run it. Goonie Posted May 23, 2008 Author Posted May 23, 2008 Thanks again! Quick question: During the mid day, do you want to fish deeper waters? And shallower in the mornings and nights? Waters are still pretty cold up here, air temps haven't really broke 70s yet. Also, when water is choppy compared to flat, does this affect fishing? Quote
HesterIsGod Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 welcome. Right now fish mid day more, because the fish will be shallower, soaking up the suns heat and feeding in anticipation of the spawn. When the water is choppy it makes decreases light penetration, creates micro currents, and can consentrate baitfish. Fish accordingly. Quote
