shsesc Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I've only fished for sunfish and trout before (in scouts), but my brother tells me there are big bass in the lake by our house. I have no boat or access to a boat. I have been trying to cast into the weediest places and wherever there is cover, but I haven't gotten any bites. I've learned alot from this site and I've applied some of it so far. If you're from CT please read my post on the Northeast board, I ask some specific questions about CT and Spring lake and North Farms Reservoir in particular. Next time I go out I'll try an artificial worm rigged texas style as someone on another site recommended and I learned about here. That's how I found this site, I searched for "Texas Rig". I'll let you all know if I catch anything. Thanks for all the info on this site and these forums. Joe Quote

buckdawg Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I too am new to bass fishing. Let me tell you this site, hands down, is the best. The articles alone have the most and best information to help you with any topic you may have from rod selection to t-rigging to how to fish a senko. Once you've had your dose of the articles then read the forums. Holy Crap! This site rocks!!! Quote
Cephkiller Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I guarantee if you stick around here, it won't be long until you're catching them on a regular basis. Good luck and welcome. Quote
Guest avid Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Howdy and welcome, believe it or not, it's your and other guys who are just starting out that are our favorite new members. Thanks to Glenn "the boss of all bosses" This is a friendly helpful place. My advice to new bassers fishing from the bank is twofold. 1. Buy a pack of 5" Senko's. They are available at walmart if not then Kinami flash 5". Read the "Senko" sticky on the tackle forum. 2. Approach the bank with stealth. do NOT walk up to the bank and cast out as far as you can. I see this all the time. Remember most people in boats are casting to the bank. So as you approach the water line, stand back 20 feet or so and cast the senko so that it lands in the water just a few feet off the bank, then gradually toss into deeper water. do this and you WILL get bass. good luck and have fun. avid. You know...i've never done this....that's actually a good idea. Also if there are any waders in here, instead of casting directly straight out try casting side to side in shallow waters...I've caught some pretty decent fish this way.Came up with that idea after watching a bunch of baitfish swim around shorelines.I've outfish other anglers out there doing that...gave the bass a little different view of how the lure was going in direction. This works best in spring and summer when waters get warm. New 2 Bass Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 and take your time. It took me a while before I got dialed in. Al Quote

I can vouch for this!!! i was hesitant at first to try senko's because i thought i'd screw it up somehow. all i'd ever used was live bait before. bought a package just cause I thought every tackle box had to have one in it. one day i decided to give it a whirl. now it's my favorite. i'll never leave home without it!! Cigarlover 1 Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Welcome Aboard! No need to worry. You'll be catchin bass soon enough if you stick around here. Don't be afraid to try those worms weightless. Toss it out let it sink to the bottom, raise it up and let it sink back down. Repeat this till you're worm is back to shore. Be sure to watch your line. Bass will take it on the fall and you won't always feel it. Good luck and have fun! Quote
shsesc Posted May 15, 2007 Author Posted May 15, 2007 I couldn't find Kinami flashs in watermelon so I used a Gulp! sinking minnow in that color with red glitter rigged texas style on a 1/0 ewg hook. My brother caught one bass and I had one and didn't set the hook right. I'm going out to try again really soon. I did a search and it looks like no one likes Gulp!, why is that? My strike came right after I cast and my brother's did too. thanks for all the replies Joe Quote
shsesc Posted May 16, 2007 Author Posted May 16, 2007 Tried again with no luck, but I now know that something can work. The fishing reports in my area say that fishing will be better in a week. What are fishing reports based on anyway? Quote
gg4709 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I am also new and have tried Berkley worms that come scented in a liquid. I got the dark purple kind and have'nt caught one bass with it. There are large bass out at our local lake because I see people catch them all the time. Today we used a small hooked tail grub worm which worked great on the crappie in the spring time. Now its summer and I can't get much of anything to bite anymore. I have a boat and noticed several topwater splashes where bass will try to jump at something late in the evening. We also tried using a spinner bait but I think it is too big and it scares fish away. I cast the worm out and slowly reel it in and stop, then do it again. I even tried the spinner bait (which is also light green) with a split tail trailer and nothing. Tomorrow we will try to use live medium sized minnows which most people use. It could be that it is almost impossible to notice a bite until you feel a big one hit. Most of the time I mostly anticipate the hard jerk like the smaller aggressive bass give. Quote
shsesc Posted May 16, 2007 Author Posted May 16, 2007 Is my hook choice too small? What size should I use with the Gulp sinking minnows and the zoom superflukes for a texas rig? Quote
captaininsaneo Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 try a 3/0 or a 2/0 and make sure you are watching your line REALLY close. You're not always going to feel the strike often times, especially with these baits, you will see it first. You picked two really tough baits to detect a strike on, but once you master them you can go pretty much anywhere and catch bass. Quote
shsesc Posted May 18, 2007 Author Posted May 18, 2007 I tried the 3/0 offest ewg hook with the super fluke rigged texas style but with the hook a little exposed because I missed two fish because I couldn't set the hook while still using the 1/0 ewg offset hook with the Gulp! sinking minnow. I didn't catch anything last night with that setup, but I only fished it a little while and then it got dark out. I fished with one of my neighbors who is really nice, but kinda slow. He's borderline retarded, but he catches fish with no technique at all. He just ties on a hook(with an overhand knot) and uses a plastic worm with a fast steady retrieve. He caught a fish on his third cast with me. I didn't catch anything (because I couldn't set the hook). I'm taking him with me when I try for trout next time because I think he's good luck and because he doesn't drive so he can't get out that much. I'm going to try the super flukes again next time out. What else should I do? Quote
joez2872-ct Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 try sum topwater baits /also what has been working for me lately in ct is the x rap ,goodluck Quote
