Super User roadwarrior Posted March 29, 2011 Super User Posted March 29, 2011 I'm not a big fan of going small. Now don't get me wrong small baits can catch big fish. I usually don't throw anything smaller than a rage baby craw. Baby Craw, 1/8 oz bullet weight and 1/0 Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hook or bait hook. 8-) Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 29, 2011 Super User Posted March 29, 2011 Like every one I have caught bass on small lures while panfishing, but when targeting bass on small stuff I have caught a lot of fish on a Zoom tiny flukes, and 3" senkos drop shotted. Not just dinks either. Most of my 5+ lb smallmouth have been caught on various 3" inch Gulp baits. And some times every thing in the lake is biting 1/8 oz. spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted March 29, 2011 Super User Posted March 29, 2011 YoZuri Snap Beans. Ditto; There was a yearly contest here on who could catch the biggest bass over the season and the prize was a new corvette. The story has it the guy at the boat dock left his rod hang over the side of the boat with one of these snap beans on when the biggest bass ever seen in these waters hit it. He is enjoying the new vette now. Bill BTW; Hearing about this don't be afraid to drop your sinking baits straight down and hit the bottom and reel it up a tad and get jiggy/twitchey with it. I've done this with success with senko's and sinking jointed rapala's and shad raps. It works. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Prety much all I use are small lures anymore. 1/8 oz Strike King cranks are hot for me now. Last spring I nailed a 5 lb bass on a 2" Senko rigged wacky on an Owner Mosquito hook. As for "no action" baits, at times they are what's needed. I've been known to rig 2" tail sections of old stick worms on a 1/16 oz ball head jig and crush all species, including crappie, bass and pike. The biggest load of BS in fishing is "Gotta have big baits to catch big fish" Second biggest load of bs in fishing is that you cannot catch bass year round on big baits. Quote
Bass Junkie Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Smallest Heddon Torpedo, and size 2 Clousers.... Quote
HardHookset Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I wacky rig a 4inch senko on a carolina rig for big smallies here in Canada. Works awesome on a slow drag. Quote
Bass XL Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Every so often, I'll throw a float n' fly rig with a 1/32 oz. marabou jig. That's about as small as I get though. Quote
Andy C Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 The biggest bass of my life 8.35lbs was caught on the small storm subwart in bluegill color. Quote
7mm-08 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I've caught many a nice bass on small inline spinners such as roostertails and blue foxes etc. I ALWAYS keep a Terminator inline spinner tied on my UL setup for days when the fish just don't want to bite. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I had a fishing tournament this past weekend and no one got any bites.. the fishing was horrible.. After thinking about it, I wish I would've thrown some smaller baits.. such as roostertails or mr twisters.. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted March 30, 2011 Super User Posted March 30, 2011 Last year I strayed away from my ultralight and small baits in general. It was one of my worst fishing years ever. There were other things I did that contributed to it, such as trying too many different baits too often and losing focus on what I was doing. One of the hottest summers on record didn't help matters either. Speaking for myself, I clearly saw positive results when I started using smaller baits. It's a technique that's worked well for me. Not everyone will embrace it, just as throwing swimbaits isn't for everyone. Both methods catch fish. Funny you hardly ever hear anything about Mr. Twisters in a 'serious' forum such as this, as if they're somehow not worthy. They are some fish catching machines. Quote
BassThumb Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 The good old Beetle Spin gets tossed every year as a last, last resort. Quote
senko_77 Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Love the 1/16oz Bitsy Bug with a small Uncle J's Pork Trailer. My PB fell to a BPS Finesse Craw w/ a 1/0 EWG and a 1/16oz weight with 8lb line. Quote
