Fish Chris Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Well first thing.... I bought some of that 30 lb Big Game line for my leader material, and just from spooling it onto the smaller (slimmer) spool, it felt fine... very similar to the Maxima Ultra Green, I'm hoping to replace with it. Then I was thinking, now all I need is a spool of 20 lb Big Game, for my medium weight bass gear leaders. As I go to put away the rest of the 30 lb, I'm like, "What's this" ? ...an almost full spool of Big Game 20 lb ! Ha ! Don't ask me where it came from, or how long I've had it ? I'm wondering about the shelf life now ? (need to go read that recent thread) and maybe put it through some bench tests.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Next, remember I was asking about heavy spinning rods ? Mainly for my swimbaits.... but I can use the same rod for Stripers too. Well, I was looking at my rod rack, and I was thinking, "I do have that one brand spanking new Okuma Guide Select rod, that was just a little light for 5 oz swimbaits... But how light was that rod anyway" ? > 10-20 (my swimbait rods are the next one up... 12-25) So then I pick up the rods I've been using for Stripers (including one that is about to fall completely apart, and just lost a guide) and it's, drumroll please... 10-20 ! Ha ! I got a brand new Striper rod, sitting right here on my rod rack, and hadn't even thought about it Wonder what else I have lying around here that I could possibly use ? After the screwed up day I had, it kind of seems like a fair payback Peace, Fish Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 If you come accross a blue Abu C3 baitcast reel it's mine. I misplaced that sucker about 4 years ago and keep expecting it to turn up. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 24, 2011 Super User Posted March 24, 2011 I never had the desire to throw 5 oz lures because of the rod needed to handle those lures. For a 20# fish especially from a boat I prefer a 10-20 rod and lighter baits, more comfortable for me. I was tossing 1 1/2-2 oz on a 10-25 rod rated up 3 oz yesterday offshore and I'm not liking that anymore, trimming back to a 10-20, although the extra spine did come in handy for amberjacks. Quote
MNGeorge Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 One of my brothers lives not far from the Plano Tackle Box factory where they have an outlet store. a couple of weeks ago, he called saying he was going over there and asked if I wanted him to pick me up anything. I asked him to get me 2 shallow 3700 size boxes. Fast forward to Monday of this week...I'm going through stuff getting ready for Roadtrip VI and what do I find...2 shallow 3700 size boxes, brand new, forgot all about them. Now the problem is figuring out if old age is catching up with me or do I simply have too much stuff? Quote
Super User Alpster Posted March 24, 2011 Super User Posted March 24, 2011 Now the problem is figuring out if old age is catching up with me or do I simply have too much stuff? If you are like me, it's probably both! LOL Ronnie Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 24, 2011 Super User Posted March 24, 2011 Good going, Chris. Keep looking around and see what else you can find. Just remember, if you can't find it then it is time to call out the Bait Monkey!!! ;D ;D ;D Quote
Getfished Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Yesterday I took the glittersled in for some TLC at the shop. I always empty the boat when I do that. It has been a while since it was in there last and the stuff that came out of the depths of those cabinets was an eyeful. It ain't all goin back I'll tell ya that for sure. Probably gonna remove about 20 lbs of plastic and 3 plano crankbait boxes. I may have to donate the plastic. I'm considering buying an airbrush to punish the cranks . We'll see. Quote
christine Cellino Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Does your index finger get sore from throwing swimbaits with a spinning rod? It seems like mine would. Quote
Fish Chris Posted March 25, 2011 Author Posted March 25, 2011 Thanks for the replies Christine, not so much my index finger (you mean from the line ripping past it, right ?) as my shoulder. But even that is only an early season thing. I get conditioned to it pretty quick. Couple weeks maybe. Peace, Fish Quote
