See the blurb on another site about the area that KVD was fishing in being raped by the locals. The way it read to me was that  TONS of big fish were being REMOVED!! If that's true, it's a shame, but not unexpected. Thats the way to take care of the place and to stay classy locals.

I didn't see the "blurb", but if the locals have the appropriate licenses and are staying within their daily limits, it's their right to keep what they catch.

If they remove enough quality fish, the fishery will suffer. If the fishery suffers, chances are it will receive fewer visitors and make it far less likely for future tournaments to be held in the area. As a result, there will be less money trickling into the local economy since good fisheries as well as tournaments bring tourists and money spenders. So in the long run, they could end up screwing themselves over a couple of fish dinners.

That's the age we live in, a guy with a gps can do some damage.  KVD says he can't even fish the same ledge twice when he comes to KY lake but he still dominates, pretty sad.

The thing I always liked about fishing was learning how to catch em myself, not learning how to copy someone else doing it.  Is there actually some satisfaction in that somewhere?

I would imangine for a lot of these folks it's called putting food on the table - remember it has been reported that it took Perry's family three days to eat the world record bass.

Yup. The economy sucks right now and alot of folks are fishing to put food on the table, not for trophies or bragging rights.

Put yourself in their shoes for a second. You heard of (or saw) a pro fisherman catch some fairly large fish out of a lake in your area. Would't it make sense to hit this lake to feed your family?

Shallow water with stumps and that many huge bass. It's hard for me to believe that the bass fishing locals were not aware of this spot. It was probably one of those locals that turned the pros on to it. As for fish being taken out, that is not the only place with nice bass and if the laws are obeyed then a good fishery can handle it. That being said, it still breaks my heart to see someone keep a monster. There are plenty of other edible fish.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I read the same thing somewhere.  And I doubt most of those fishermen were fishing for food because they were needy. With the cost of fuel I'm sure it would be cheaper to just go and buy some fish sticks at the supermarket.  However if they are within the laws then there is no need to worry about it and Im sure, or atleast hoped, most practiced catch and release.

I agree, it would be a 4+ mile run to get to the lake from the nearest ramp. Not fishing for food.

I am not buying it for one second. With the money they spend in gas they could go to the d**n store and buy food. We have too many meat hunters in our region that do not appreciate what Bass fising is all about.

It's mostly due to the saltwater fishing in our area they think if they do not keep every dang fish they catch that they are wasting there time...It's really sad

The quantity and quality of fish the guys in the Classic pulled out of that area was amazing.  They were pretty much on top of each other too.  Flipping in the grass in Venice looked more fun to me, but they just weren't catching the same fish or didn't have the time.  It's just an amazing fishery, it should be fine.

I hadn't heard about this but I am not in the least bit surprised. If they were taking the fish out of there it's a bit difficult to explain without stepping on someones toes. If subsistence was really the motivating factor I don't believe it would have ended this way.

I think this is normal human behavior, monkey see monkey do.  The fish and game biologists will objectively manage the fishery to the best of their ability and set regulations.

Personally I believe freshwater fishing for food is a risky endeavor. If you don't count your time then maybe it makes sense.

I have a hunch many of those fish will probably be eaten but not before the fisherman gets his ego stroked. It's the big hunter/gatherer hero thing. Satisfy that and then we will eat.

They can hurt the fishery but my guess is it's not likely.

I didn't see the blurb either but I do recall a comment made by Zona from the classic that in 3 weeks that area would just be a grass mat. I am not positive he was speaking of that area but if so would that prevent folks from fishing it? Just curious.

As soon as some of you folks get over your righteous indignation of others doing what is lawfully allowed, you may want to consider the fact that catch and keep fishing has been going on forever.  Also, this area was pounded by Katrina which pumped untold gallons of saltwater into that area.  Yet we somehow witnessed a record weight being caught.

So what's the problem?

I would bet there are countlerss other spawning flats in the Louisiana Delta. That place is huge. Targeting one area like that shouldn't hurt to badly I wouldn't think. Why would anyone want to eat a bass anyway? Walleyes are for eating, bass are for catching.

The blurb is but one person's opinion.  Were there "tons" (2000# per ton) removed or just many fish?   A lot fish to one person may see like a smaller amount to someone else, neither opinion would give the actual percentage removed as compared to the total population.

If the locals are taking legal fish within the legal limit it's their privilege.  My guess is they have been doing it for years and probably don't need any professional fisherman to show them where they are and how to catch them.

I'd like to know the mortality rate for these fish from the big tournaments after setting in livewells all day, then being transported 20 miles over land to a weigh-in, then sitting for hours waiting to be weighed in, then being handled repeatedly and taken out of the water for photos. Then after the weigh-in where are the fish taken? Back to where they were caught or put in a big container and dumped at a convenient location after many stressful hours.

I like fish, I catch fish and I'll eat fish I like to catch from time to time. I'll also practice catch and release when I don't want to eat the fish. And fishsticks are not the same. :)

I've got to agree with a number of people here. Its within their legal right to keep fish if they want to. The thought of the fishermen ruining is a concern but i don't feel that its as bad as we make it out to be. I remember fishing a tournament in Guntersville one summer and the fish kill rate was insane. I was disgusted that the fish weren't being taken the plate. It was hundreds of fish killed over two weeks because of tournaments ( nothing against tournaments). But on that same note if you look at the fishery it is still awesome even with that problem continuing every summer.

I think the only thing that will change on Cataouatche is every fish will see a 1.5 Strike Kind KVD crank. Once Louisiana Sportsman wrote Cataouatche had "more 8lb bass" per square acre than Toledo bend or possibly any other body of water in Louisiana, there has been a lot of big fish taken out and put on walls. This was 2-3 years ago.  Its not the first time anglers down here have heard of this lake, and fished it, possibly a few more out-of-staters though.

BOOO HOOO HOOO!!! So some people kept a few nice fish, its not going to hurt such a large fishery. It is evident that place is loaded with bass, plenty for fun and plenty for food. I seriously dont know why someone taught a lot of you that keeping a bass is just flat out wrong. I can see if its a small pond and you'd like to conserve the fishing there, but many of you will complain about someone keeping a few bass from large bodies of water that are loaded with more bass than you can count. And many are probably complaining about a body of water they will never even fish. I catch and release, dont even eat fish, but i also believe no one should be criticized by pleasure/sport anglers(includes me) for legally keeping fish.
