Stephen D. Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Hey guys, The local pond where I predominantly fish is about a 4-acre pond. There is only one area that has significant vegetation coming up from the water, but the water depth is probably 1 foot at the most. I would like to be able to throw some frogs and flip some creature baits in this mess, but is the water depth too shallow to have any bass? How shallow will bass get? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 1, 2011 Super User Posted March 1, 2011 As long as there is enough water to cover their back bass will go there. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 1, 2011 Super User Posted March 1, 2011 I've seen them lying along the bank with their backs out of water. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted March 1, 2011 Super User Posted March 1, 2011 I've seen them lying along the bank with their backs out of water. ditto the one in my avatar was caught in less then a foot of water i thought it was a carp till it smashed the frog going past it Quote
Super User senile1 Posted March 1, 2011 Super User Posted March 1, 2011 Nothing is too shallow and nothing is too deep except when a thermocline has formed. Quote
cwen Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I never saw any with their backs out but pretty close. I know i caught in 6 inches of water for sure. Quote
J_Pearson Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I've seen them lying along the bank with their backs out of water. ditto the one in my avatar was caught in less then a foot of water i thought it was a carp till it smashed the frog going past it x3. Three fish I weighed in at a local Tuesday night tourney last August had their backs just breaking the surface. They absolutely killed Kermie. They'll fit in water just a few inches deep. So "too" shallow nearly doesn't exist. JP Quote
fishizzle Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I've seen them lay under leaves blown toward shore a foot wide in 4" of water in the fall. Lots of bass. Must be the warm cover since the leaves are brown. Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 1, 2011 Super User Posted March 1, 2011 As long as it is ankle deep. Quote
BadBassWV Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 If your lure comes back with dry dirt on it, then I would say that is to shallow. Otherwise go for it. Quote
Stephen D. Posted March 1, 2011 Author Posted March 1, 2011 Great, thanks everyone! Looks like I have a new spot to fish! Quote
John J. Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 The only thing I would be concerned about would be winter kill. But it doesn't hurt to try it! Our pond is 5 foot max and bass thrive in it! Course, me and my buddy stocked it. Give it a shot! Never hurts Quote
Missouribassman95 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I've caught bass in water so shallow I thought only minnows would live. haha! Quote
