wisconsin heat Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Like every avid angler, Everytime i go to walmart i always have to go to the fishing section, and i never have the intent to buy anything because my walmart only carries lures like inline spinners, storm swimbaits, and some rapalas.. sometimes they have a bargain bin which will have bomber/storm hardbaits or terminator spinnerbaits but thats about it. but lately i bought an abu garcia pro max on sale for $45 (original 80) and just yesterday i strolled by and saw strike king KVD square bills and series 5xd's What do u guys got? Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 It varies from one store to the next. I have at least 6 within a 20-30 minute drive, and they all carry different stuff. The one closest to the house carries a decent selection of Zoom plastics, a few different Berkley palstics, and Rapala cranks, but there's one about 20 minutes from here that carries Citicas, Revo S, All Star rods, lots of Strike King cranks and spinnerbaits, and a much wider variety of lines than you'd expect to see at a dept store. Heck, we even have one about 15 minutes north of here that stocks a pretty decent selection of fly fishing gear. Quote
jdw174 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Just about nothing! 15 years ago the WalMart here had a great fishing department. Now it's a couple of short aisles with mostly empty hooks where merchandise should be. A few Rapalas, couple Bandits, Strike Kings......it is however where I buy my YUM Dingers at $3/bag. Quote
Gangley Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Mine has Rapalas, Strike King and Terminator spinnerbaits, ZOOM soft plastics, Rebel Lures, quite a few various STORM brand items, Luck E Strike worms, and tons of various lines from braid to flouro. The best part about my walmart though, is that they sell ammo for dirt cheap. Quote
Super User bassfisherjk Posted February 7, 2011 Super User Posted February 7, 2011 Wal-Mart's around here cut way back on the amount of fishing stuff they carry compared to years back. Quote
The Rooster Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 All 7 of mine are about like all the ones you have. I however, happen to like Ugly Stik rods, particularly the Ugly Stik Lite Pros that can only be found at Walmart (not to be confused with the regular Ugly Stik Lite). They have a few very cheap spinning reels that are fair for their price, the Abu Garcia C101 and C102 Cardinals. Decent for someone with less than $40 to spend. They recently added Pflueger Trions also, which I can't complain about since my Trion has been as good as I could have ask for from it (it was the President reel that wasn't). Otherwise, there's nothing great there, but if they ran out of the basic stuff like Berkley XL mono, or Powerbait 7" black worms, or Gamakatsu 3/0 EWG then I'd have to go a little further to get those things and that would be an inconvenience. I use a lot of Roostertails though (name should tell you that) and they have a few good ones. I rely on them for that since they're harder to find here otherwise. All in all, I won't complain about the fishing section there. I've seen it MUCH better in the past but it's also better now than it's been in the last 5 years too so I still enjoy being in it, and it gives me something to do while the wife is shopping the rest of the store. Basics for me from Walmart: Berkley or Stren mono Gamakatsu hooks various Zoom, Berkley, and other soft plastics Rapala lures Worden's Roostertails a few different other hard baits like Heddon, Rebel, and Bomber brands crappie jigs and grubs for them the occasional Strike King or Booyah spinnerbait/buzzbait UGLY STIKS and LITE PROS (these rods are great for just generally tough rods, GET SOME)!!!! Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 7, 2011 Super User Posted February 7, 2011 wally world in my area leaves a lot to be desired. Quote
GrundleLove Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 the walmart in my area has a bunch of great stuff. The bad part i guess you could say is that its so easy to steal from their fishing area that LITERALLY guys will just waltz in load up a tacklebox or their cargo pants and stroll out. No one says a thing no one knows a thing. To the point where its just awkward when a bunch of anglers come in who dont even know each other but just chat fishing while stuffing their pants. its absolute crazyness. Quote
SharkHat Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 The only thing I get there is my license. Quote
Super User deep Posted February 7, 2011 Super User Posted February 7, 2011 Gamakatsu hooks, Kinami flash (senkos), Strike King spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, Rapala and Strike King hardbaits, Berkely and Stren lines. Oh, and Sufix Elite too. That's a good thing since the Dick's Sporting Goods that is nearby stopped selling Sufix Siege. Quote
JigMe Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I buy all the Arkie Jigs I can found at my walmart, and sometimes they have them for 50 cents each. I use more expensive Jigs as well, but Arkie is still the best for me. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I have a few walmarts within a 20 mile radius(actually 6 of them). Recently most of them have upgraded their tackle quality. 6 months ago it was all crap, but i have noticed that they have started carrying Mustad KVD triple grip hooks, Owner hooks, KVD square bills, strike king crank baits, an assortment of jigs( the luck-e-craft looks really good @ $1.96 per jig) besides arkie, and a few higher quality soft plastics. I also noticed they are carrying pinnacle baitcast combos (which is a huge upgrade to the shakespeare xterra) and pflueger spinning combos. 1 Walmart in particular had 2 Daiwa reels 1 was a Tierra for 119.00 and the other was an Exceler for $69.00 Hope they decide to keep adding better stuff as i now visit them a lot more often. Quote
Shad_Master Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 My local Wal-Mart sells the best bar-b-cue chicken wings in town!!! Oh, you meant fishing stuff - that's where I buy all my Power Pro and chatter baits Quote
7mm-08 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 They don't carry too much in my area. They stopped carrying scum frogs the last couple of years so I barely even glance at the fishing stuff anymore in protest. > They have started carrying some nicer (relatively speaking) reels such as Pfueger Presidents and the such which is nice to see. I was reading an article the other day which said Walmart had taken a big hit due to cutting back the variety of merchandise they stock. Supposedly they are attempting to rectify it but I dunno if it will apply to fishing equipment but one can only hope. Quote
OHIO Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 My local Wal-Mart has good hooks and line, but that's about it. I don't think they are targeting hardcore anglers, so that could explain why they have cheaper stuff. They have Zoom and Berkley plastics, cheapo reels, and the normal Ugly Stiks and Lighting Rods. One thing they don't have is the one dollar spinnerbaits. I wish I could get my hands on those, so I don't have to worry about losing them. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted February 7, 2011 Super User Posted February 7, 2011 I hate the 2 wally worlds around me....they don't carry really anything good. By that I mean, no tackle that would work in our local waters. I will say that in a pinch, I got my son a starter rod/reel, but he soon out grew that. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted February 7, 2011 Super User Posted February 7, 2011 No. It's pretty bad when K Mart often has better stuff than them, and that aint sayin' much :-/ Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 No. It's pretty bad when K Mart often has better stuff than them, and that aint sayin' much :-/ I bought the majority of my local Kmart's fishing inventory when they decided to minimize their sporting goods dept. At this time, they stock nothing but a handful of cheapo combos (rod, reel, and a tackle box full of crap nobody in their right mind would use), and a few misc. kid's tackleboxes (Dora, Spongebob, etc.). That's about it. Quote
VABassin'14 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Our Wal-Mart carries a good bit of stuff that I use. The main things I have purchased from there are Rage Tail Craws, Berkley 7'' power worms, Booyah spinnerbaits, and I buy a TON of Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp EWG hooks. It seem that the last few years our Wal-mart has added a little more each year. I think the main reason is because they don't have any real competition around them. Quote
Missouribassman95 Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I can't complain really. I have two wal-marts within 30 miles of me. They hold a very good variety of different berkley, and Zoom baits (esp. Gulp Jerk Shad, and Magnum Lizards). There also is good selection of fishing line, mono mainly though. Quote
airborne_angler Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Im always waiting around for the clearance. When the prices of items gets ridiculously low,I buy a whole peg of it. They had some Kinami Flash(Senkos) on the peg for $.75 a bag and they still werent moving. I scooped up each and every one for that price.Heck they were regularly about $4.50 a bag. Some of the clearance items are really a great deal. Normally its items they arent gonna continue carrying. Quote
airborne_angler Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 No. It's pretty bad when K Mart often has better stuff than them, and that aint sayin' much :-/ Our local K mart doesnt have a fishing section. Its all Hunting and workout stuff. Quote
WanderLust Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 My local wally world is a sad scene... Line and terminal tackle is the only its good for. Quote
Boss Hogg Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 No. It's pretty bad when K Mart often has better stuff than them, and that aint sayin' much :-/ Heck our k-mart only carries rod and real combos and some other misc stuff. But my walmarts it really depends on what part of town I'm in so I really can't say wich ones are good and bad. Rofl. I don't always shop at the same store. Quote
BassShephard Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 2 wally worlds (couldn't resist ) around here had a lot of selection, but this year they cut back on every thing...just means I can support my local sporting good store. I will miss the $12 portable Aerators they sold though (lost one of mind and need some for a live well I want to build), they're very handy. Quote
