Do any of you guys fish retention ponds? my local lake is being drained and they are digging it deeper so i had to find a new lake. I found a retention pond about 50 yards wide and 150 yards long. WOW does it have bass! my profile pic is one of the ones i caught. about 3 pounds but it is just filled with bass! do any of you fish retention ponds? got any pics? :)

Yes i fish them quite often. I have numerous one's for Subdivisions that we maintain and several that the inlaws have on there property. I have found that they are great for fishing and learning new techniques but usually don't hold really big bass cause of the size( mostly they are smaller bodies of water) and number of bass in them.

I will say that there is one pond in particular that doesn't have the number of bass but does have some really big one's in there.

I was going to, so I mailed Florida DOT to make sure it was alright (the retention pond is owned by them). There's a ton of those down here. They got all huffy about it and said I couldn't...saying some crap like I would distract drivers. What they basically said is that they don't want to be liable for me. I've looked in the pond and it's loaded as well....too bad.

I fish them all the time. A lot of the neighborhoods around me have them and they are loaded with fish.

The fish usually aren't big though, but there are a ton. I would rather catch five one pound fish than one five pound fish.

They make for some great fishing and you can usually access all the water from the bank which is nice.

I had absolutely no idea that some of them had fish in them. Perhaps you have just inspired me to go check some out!

yes, and most of them are catch and release ( i never keep them anyway) so they really get a chance to get big where i fish. There seem to be good numbers and size. One guy couldnt keep a minnow on his hook, literally as soon as he threw it in he caught one, each 2 pounds or more, crazy stuff. and this one isnt even fished hard because its tucked away pretty good down a trail. good luck :)

My PB Smallie came out of the pond behind my mom's condo.  The ponds/neighborhood were created in 1991. This old guy that lived in the neighborhood would go to Champlain and catch a bunch of stuff (SM, LM, Rock Bass, P-Seeds, Bullhead) and bring them back in his live-wells and stock the ponds (3 ponds, top one is filled by a spring then over flows to #2 then to the bottom one).

5.25lbs and 25"

My personal best LM came from a retention pond. 25.5" and guessing it to be around 8#
