kadas Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 I can at least make it through a Roland Martin program. Charlie Ingram, host of Fishing University, is too much to take. That guy does everything short of servicing the salesman he is fishing with when pushing a product. Yea-- I know this is mean but I get tired of him having his guests get his fish because he is too big to get down and get them!!--Sorry :
Super User NorcalBassin Posted January 22, 2011 Super User Posted January 22, 2011 Reminds me of "The Truman Show" with all of the not so subtle plugs.
JamesH Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 He didn't get to fish his prime when there was big money on the line. Nine time AOY can do what he wants to retire comfortably. I hope he smokes the opens and earns his way into the classic and wrecks the field with his helicopter.
OHIO Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 His product pushing doesn't bother me as much as when he repeats what he says. "That's a nice fish, that's a nice fish, that's a nice fish." I think we know it's a nice fish. That turbo shot is getting the better of him. ;D
jdw174 Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Agree 110% on Roland. If I were dying for a fishing show on TV I wouldn't watch him. Never could stand him and his mouth. You're right on Charlie Ingram, too. (I do admire his Phoenix boat, though )
Quillback Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 I was watching a Roland show where he was fishing Bull Shoals, in the middle of the show they do a 5 minute break away of Roland on a turkey hunt, he shot a turkey and got in some product plugs for Beneli, Hevi-shot and some screw in choke (forgot the brand name). I had to laugh. He also like to stay at Big Cedar Lodge (Basspro hotel) when he is in the Ozarks - he mentioned that at least 3 times during the show.
Super User *Hootie Posted January 22, 2011 Super User Posted January 22, 2011 Let's all admit it, we hate everybody but ourselves. I LOVE ME MORE THAN ANYBODY ELSE!!!
Fish Chris Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Hmmmm. I might have the TV on Roland or Bill, for back ground noise. I'm so used to all trhe advertising stuff, it's just in one ear and out the other anyway. Hunt for Big Fish is pretty awesome ! And I like all those giant, weird species shows, like Monster Quest, River Monsters, etc. Actually, I don't have much time for TV anyway. Probably half of the shows I lay down to watch, I end up falling asleep in the first 15 minutes anyway LOL Fish PS, I always have to laugh when people talk about Bill Dance and how he fishes private places for all of those "big" fish Big ? Okay, so he catches lots of nice 5 to 9 lb'ers. How often does he catch a legit 13 lb'er ? Personally, I'd rather fish hammered on public waters, where I have a better chance at a 13+......
gotarheelz14 Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 All the things you guys said are true but, I actually really like Roland and his show. His son is pretty funny too! ;D
JamesH Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 All the things you guys said are true but, I actually really like Roland and his show. His son is pretty funny too! ;D Thank you. Roland Cracks me up. I don't think his product pitch would seem so bad if he were any good at it. He sucks at acting plane and simple. His pitches are very awkward like he is trying to rush through it and get it over with. But have you ever seen anyone better at pitching soft plastics under docks? The man can flat out fish. What does it say about todays field when he takes a look at it and says 'Yeah, I can still hang."
Super User Lund Explorer Posted January 22, 2011 Super User Posted January 22, 2011 I'm pretty sure that everyone gets bombarded by advertisements every time you turn on the TV, and not just the commercials. Granted the fishing/hunting shows are more blatant about it, or maybe just more open is what to call it. Have you ever watched a NASCAR race? They're almost as bad and maybe more so as the races are longer. And the the more subtle sports. How about a football game where if you are really looking, you'll see Nike slashes, UnderArmor's little logo peaking out there too. Basketball, and Golf are the same way. Then there's baseball and hockey with advertisements along the walls. Do you think that blimp is only there to provide you with a birds-eye view? If so, why does Goodyear appear across the side of the thing? Then you down to the subliminal advertising that is entwined in almost every TV show or movie. Did you know that Coca Cola pays the producers to have the star drink out of a can with their logo on it? A few years back, Alan bought a Porsche on the TV show Two and a Half Men if you remember. Do you think somebody got an endorsement check for mentioning the name (correctly or not) numerous times in a half an hour? It doesn't matter if it is Rolland Martin or Charlie Sheen, it's how they make their living. If you don't want to watch it, switch over to Fox News. Then you'll only get advice on buying Gold! ;D
SlateTundra Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Here's my rant. Roland's need to inform the audience of his sponsor's product, every five minutes, is absolutely ridiculous. It could be a good show, but all the pitches = garbage show. Charlie Ingram - Fishing University is a very close 2nd. "how do you like those Diamond Gusset jeans?" They're garbage!! And the repetitive music...oh my ears! Bill Dance - the only thing I hate about his show...same private lake (probably his)...1st fish is a 5 - 6 lber...so is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th...you get the idea. Informative...scenery and action is very repetitive. Roland & Charlie...horrible pitches. They completely stop what they're doing...pitch the product to the audience...go back to fishing...and repeat. Not very subtle at all. Strike King's Pro Team Journal - the entire show is about their product! That's why I like Lindners Angling Edge/North American Fisherman/In-Fisherman...they pitch products as well...but subtle...it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb. End of my rant.
OHIO Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 I don't really mind Dance's show. I like the fact that he always catches big, healthy fish. I think it's more fun to watch someone catch a big fish than a dink, but that's just me. "Strike King's Pro Team Journal - the entire show is about their product." It's obviously gonna be about their product if it's their show.
JamesH Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Well, if you really sit back and think about it. Obviously with out the constant pitching of products then there would be no show. If fishing shows had enough viewers they could get one BIG sponsorship that you would hear about once or twice and see thier commercials during the breaks. But, since there is no big sponser wanting to pick up these shows then you have to deal with the constant pitching of lots of products. When you get sick of Roland Mentioning a product every 5 minutes its not because he wants to say it that often. It because the sponsor says mention our product atleast 10 times or we pull our support. How is it different then the pro anglers ad splattered jerseys and boats. Nascar vehicles. With out sponsorship and lots of it there will be no room for fishing on TV. It would be replaced by cage fighting and womens basketball.
Stasher1 Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 The funniest thing about all of the advertising in fishing shows is the one with the least (or most subtle) product endorsement is The Bass Pros. They sell pretty much everything you see on the show (including the boats), but it's never crammed down your throat like the others.

By far the most annoying and worthless"fishing"show ever created. And How is it a university? The only thing i have ever been taught is how to promptly change stations! : We have also learned that Charlie is deaf. Everything the co-host says has to be repeating...soooo annoying

Hahaha i live in California so i know the 13 pounder thing.Im pretty sure 5 to 9 pounds is a big bass lol. What you're talking about (the 13 pound thing) is considered a giant .I still haven't broke the 10 pound mark 8 is my PB

They sell pretty much everything you see on the show (including the boats), but it's never crammed down your throat like the others. Right...they don't stop within the show and say "hey, look at this neat thing by so & so!" For example...I personally like how the Lindners pitch their sponsors products by just showing short fast video clips of it. No stopping the action to talk about it. They do it very well by just letting the audience see the gears they use on their show, every now and then, talking about the usage & functions of that particular equipment/lure. Kill two birds with one stone.
rboat Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Roland's constant ads are horrible, but him saying the same thing over and over is worse. I am afraid he is becoming senile or may have the beginnings of alzheimer's. I hope not, aside from product endorsements he seems like a real nice guy and he sure knows where to find bass and how to catch them. His son, Scott seems pretty cool too.
Super User J Francho Posted January 23, 2011 Super User Posted January 23, 2011 Wow, four pages worth of basically slamming a guy that got to do what NO ONE here has, which is fish for a living...... We're done here.
