jdw174 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 A few years ago, I got one of those famous "unwanted" mailings from B.A.S.S. in the form of a hardbound book called "Advanced Bass Fishing Skills". It was the first in a series of books to be sent unless you cancelled. I actually bought it after flipping through the pages. The price was right, considering the quality of the photos and paper. I then cancelled the rest of the mailings. It's an excellent read for tuning up my memory on various lures/presentations over the winter. It's outdated a bit now....has almost nothing on dropshotting/shakeyhead techniques, but a good read nontheless. Another one that is quite good is from In-Fisherman. It's the #3 book in their "Critical Concepts" series called "Bass Presentations". It's in paperback format and it's not fancy, but it's very good and worthwhile. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 1, 2011 Super User Posted January 1, 2011 ......Now, If I could just get the Bass to read a few of these.... I often say that I don't think that the bass have read the same books as I have ... ;D ;D I have sitting on my desk right now, waiting to the read or re-read during the cold winter days when the water is hard: In Pursuit of Giant Bass - Bill Murphy Spoonplugging - Buck Perry Knowing Bass - Keith Jones Largemouth Bass - Fundamentals (In-Fisherman) Largemouth Bass - Location (In-Fisherman) Now, I just got to knuckle down and knock-off these 1300 pages before spring ... maveric1 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 BASS put out there serious of like 5 or so books and Northeramerican Fisherman/Outdoorsman (whatever there called) put out a set also. Both of these are a decent set of books to have. I was able to get both (9 or 10 books) for $10.00 at a flea market. But I do own many of the other nooks listed. They have a few that have a section dedicated to how one would obtain sponsorship, these would be great reads for many younger anglers. Quote

You can find many of the N.A.F.C. and B.A.S.S. titles as a package deal on e-bay for as little as $20 for 4 or more books. E-bay is a great place to look for fishing books at a reduced price. Quote
fishermantony Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Bill Murphy's book about giant bass is the best bass book I have read, and I have stacks of bass books and magazines. X2.....Inspirational book, a lot more than just strategy in that book! Reading that gets your blood pumping! Quote
Todd Driscoll Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Bass Wars Great perspective on tourney fishing. Another good one is Diary of a Bass Pro (Joe Thomas). Other favorites are Knowing Bass and Sowbelly. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted January 4, 2011 Super User Posted January 4, 2011 In their day, I much enjoyed Jason Lucas (Lucas On Bass), Buck Perry (Spoon Plugs), Bill Binkelman (Nightcrawler Secrets), Homer Circle and others. After all is said and done, there was only one publication that had any lasting impact on my approach to angling. Hands-down, it was the first Study Reports published by the In-Fisherman (Al & Ron Lindner). Telemetry studies later conducted by In-Fisherman, handily debunked most of the migration theories suggested by former writers. To that I'd add, anything written by Kevin VanDam (now there's a no-brainer, eh?). Roger Quote
Super User islandbass Posted January 4, 2011 Super User Posted January 4, 2011 Here are some books I've read and checked out from the library. If they were worthy to purchase, then I bought them. I am such a geek that I keep basic information about each book I've read (ISBN#, Author, etc.) so that I could quickly find them in the library again: Knowing Bass Keith A. Jones, PhD ISBN: 1-59228-616-X ISBN: 1-58574-523-5 paperback IB's note: A Scientific Approach to Catching more bass. It is a wonder how few bass anglers have taken the effort to read or find books like this. Their loss. This book dispels a few myths bass anglers hold true. Want to know which ones? Read the book!! J Largemouth Bass Don Oster ISBN: 0-86573-005-9 ISBN: 0-86573-016-4 (paperback) Successful Bass Fishing Ken Schultz ISBN: 0-07-057236-4 Circle on Bass - Bass Wisdom from a Master Homer Circle ISBN: 1-55821-463-1 In Pursuit of Giant Bass Bill Murphy ISBN: 0-9633120-0-6 IB's Note: Great Read Covers the stitching technique and how to anchor your boat. Another keeper. Bass Angler's Almanac John Weiss ISBN: 1-58574-214-7 Sow Belly Monte Burke ISBN: 0-525-94863-5 ISBN: 0-452-28715-4 Paperback IB's Note: Great book about the search for big bass. Not Bass books but still well worth the reading. Title: What Fish See Author: Colin J, Kageyama, O.D., F.C.O.V.D. ISBN: 1-57188-140-9 IB's Note: Tons of information about the color shift that happens underwater. While it mainly focuses on steelhead and salmon, the knowledge Dr. Kageyama imparts is invaluable for bass anglers too. BTW, there is a bass section that I found most informative. I have become a better angler after reading this book. Make better, more educated selections in your choices for lure colors. This book is now part of my personal library. Quote
dulouz Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Ok, so it's not about bass fishing and it is more or less fiction, but I love "A River Runs Through It" by Norman Maclean. The book is better, but you can also watch the movie. It really brings out the art in what we do in the pursuit of fish. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Catch More Bass by Stan Fagerstrom. Stan put bass fishing on the map in the Pacific Northwest. He's a hoot if you ever get to meet him. In the day his trick casting was nothing less than phenomenal. Quote
Tom H. Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 If a fellow just wants to sit down and read, I suggest getting the book "The Best of B.A.S.S. Masters". Quote
Nick Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Lunker by Underwood gets my wote too. He was a real pioneer who looked at largemouth behavior in Texas lakes through years of scuba diving. Check your library. Another oldie but goodie was Jason Lucas' book on bass fishing. From an upper Midwestern perspective from the 60's and earlier. We get a good peek at one of the pioneers of the sport. Can't remember the exact title. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Bass Wisdom by "Uncle" Homer Circle is my favorite so far. I plan on picking up KVD's book soon. Quote
Hot Rod Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Jay Yelas' book was very inspirational to me. And there were some great bass fishing insights in that book as well KVD's two books are good too and I like Shaw Grigsby's book. Quote

That list is similar to mine. I would add KVD's Bass Strategies to the list. I think In-Fisherman's Location book is excellent. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 6, 2011 Super User Posted January 6, 2011 I have the KVD Bass Stratagies book...but I've already read it so it's not on my 1300 page reading pile! ;D Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted January 8, 2011 Super User Posted January 8, 2011 Bass Pro Shops new 2011 master catalog. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 9, 2011 Super User Posted January 9, 2011 Well, there have been a lot of great suggestions here already. I have nothing new to add; rather I'd suggest if you have not read Buck Perry, you are missing out on the basic knowledge that will make you the best fisherman you can be. There are also tons of great bass fishing reading right here on this forum. This place is a compilation of some of the best fisherman in the norther hemisphere - period. The articles here and the commentary will help out anyone in pursuit of bass. Quote
CSimon2 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I just received a copy of "Bass In Depth" by Bob McNally for my birthday! I have heard a lot of good things about this book. Has anyone read this??? Quote
Jared Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 SOWBELLY: The Quest for the World record Bass. Great book! Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted January 14, 2011 Super User Posted January 14, 2011 Enjoyed KVD's books and Ike's as well, but the most bang for your buck to learn things you may not have already known would be the In-Fishermen series. Vol 3 is my personal favorite. Quote
