No help on where to buy the flies but, I will say that my regular fishing bud, is an old fly fisherman from Montana. He bass fishes with me now and still uses his fly rod. He gave up on the flies though. He throws nothing but a 7" purple worm. Here is one of his latest from about a month ago.

I'd be fishing a purple worm on any rod if I could catch fish like that. Very nice.

Is it a worm and bare hook? Or does he add a bit of weight to get it down?

He texas rigs it with 1/8 or 3/16th worm weight.

I ordered some flies yesterday from Big Y Fly Co. They shipped the same day, and I got a nice email from the president of the company. Probably a stock reply, but nice nonetheless.

Unfortunately I also bought a custom made 3 wt. from another forum. The Internet is a great place to learn, but very bad on my purse strings. ::) Custom made sounds expensive, but it wasn't. Very reasonably priced rod. I could have paid an awful lot more for a factory rod.

Anyone familiar with Batson Forecast blanks? Seller said he hadn't weighed it yet, but believes it will weigh around 2 ounces, give or take a tad.

You guys are partially to blame. At least that is what I am planning on telling my wife. :D This is one of the sites that led me down the wrong path. The path to thinking I had to have quality equipment in order to enjoy fishing. LOL.

I think someone let the bait monkey loose in my house, then locked the door! ;D ;D

Ordered a few flies from Big Y Co. Friday.  Were waiting for me when I got home Monday afternoon.  I have one problem, tho.  The flies look too good to put in nasty water.   :D  ;D

Oh well, here's hoping I can get out this weekend.

Bass flies can be expensive, but they are much easier to tie than trout flies....they bigger.  :)  If you mess with a fly rod long, learning to tie your own should be considered.  Bass Pro, Cabela's, Orvis and others carry an assortment.

As noted above, soft plastics can be fished on the long rod quite effectively.

The baitfish patterns developed for salt water work well on bass too.  Bunny strip patterns like the one above are one of my favorites.  You can catch decent fish on smaller flies but you will catch more, larger bass using flies approaching the size of those used with conventional tackle.

You can handle bass on most any size fly rod, but you cannot toss all size flies on one rod.  So, in my opinion, if you are limited to one fly rod for bass, error on the larger size.  You can toss small flies on a 7-wt but you will endanger the back of your head and the rod if you attempt to toss a weighted 6 inch bunny strip with a 2-wt.  :)

Bass aren't leader shy so a light tippet isn't necessary.  Six or seven feet of 10-12 pound test mono works well for a leader on a 7-wt.  A 7-wt is plenty rod to handle big fish and bulky flies yet it won't over power a 3 or 4 pounder like the one I'm holding.

I've had very good luck with bonefish flies for largemouth and smallmouth. They come in pretty natural crawfish colors and usually have bead eyes to help keep them down. Lots of them have something to help keep them from getting snagged or from catching weeds and they usually have stronger, bigger hooks than most flies. The fly that I use most often is called a bonefish slider http://www.saltwaterflies.com/bonefishslider.html

They look like they would be a very simple fly to tie but they are a very good fly.
