Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 19, 2010 Super User Posted October 19, 2010 on best places to buy a few flies. I'm not going to be buying a lot (at least not to start with ;D ) Asked elsewhere what flies to buy. I want to start with a few Clouser Minnows, Wooly Buggers, Lefty's Deceiver, poppers, and a couple flies from Black Lab Flies and Supplies. Wouldn't hurt to pick up the Clouser Minnows from the originator since he lives here in PA, but I did find one place selling them for .50 cents less. I think I would prefer to buy from him now since the number of flies will be low. Like to support the local economy! A search turned up at least one place with fly prices starting at .47 cents. I'd love to pay those kind of prices, but doubt they would be worth the .47 cents. If you have any other suggestions for any other flies I should try, please don't hesitate to name them. Thanks. Oh yeah, this will mostly be for Largemouths in lakes. I do fish the Lehigh River on ocassion and the Delaware is also nearby, so I suppose some kind of crawdad imitation wouldn't hurt for the Smallmouths in these waters. Provided I can find a place on shore with enough room for me to cast. I need lots of room! All my fishing is from shore. My rod hasn't seen the water yet just to give you an idea of how poor my casting will be. Quote

bass or bass ? Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Sportsmen's Warehouse has a very nice fly selection in store. Letterbox type bins with a huge assortment of flies at @ $1 each. Other than that I can only suggest fly package deals from Bass Pro Shops online catalog. I fly fish on all my fishing trips and purchase the majority of my flies and foam beetles at Sportsmen's Warehouse. Quote

RandySBreth Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Unless someone is overstocked, most cheap flies are, well, cheap. Usually tied by 13-year old girls in Indonesia or somewhere. If you can find a local tier you'll probably pay more, but get a fly that will last for more than one fish. I tie my own, and sell a few to some local folks who would rather buy mine than ones from the big chain stores, or even the local fly shop - most of those are tied overseas somewhere, too. http://www.flyfishingjacksonhole.com/umpqua/watson_interview.htm Quote

sodaksker Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 No help on where to buy the flies but, I will say that my regular fishing bud, is an old fly fisherman from Montana. He bass fishes with me now and still uses his fly rod. He gave up on the flies though. He throws nothing but a 7" purple worm. Here is one of his latest from about a month ago. farmpond1 Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 If you are a novice, you might actually be better off with some ratty, cheap flies to start things. Then graduate to some better ones. Just a thought. Quote

DBatey Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 I used to bass fish with a fly rod and this was my best fly type, I was unable to locate a place that has them, but I can't imagine that they no longer make them. I had 3 colors, olive, black and purple. Olive was my favorite but I caught many fish on them all. I had a lot of fun fishing ponds with the fly rod, lots of big fish that were weary from pressure, but were willing to eat the subtle flies. Quote

NateFollmer Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Yeah Big Y makes great flies too. I don't think price will always dictate quality. I have bought some $2 and $3 flies that absolutely sucked. Quote
