While I don't have side imaging on my HDS units yet, I would agree with the others. When KVD won at KY Lake this year using side imaging, he said he found almost all of the schooling fish where in water that he would have over-looked with regular sonar. Lighter, faster reels, lighter more sensitive rods, and innovation like SK Rage baits and IR Sweet Beavers have all changed fishing in the last 5 years, but nothing comes close to side imaging/down scan IMO.

I don't have SI on my freshwater rig, I can't justify putting one on a Jon.  I've got one on my saltwater boat and it's scary.  I've been in bass boats with guys that have SI, just amazing.  It really is scary what you can see with them.  I can read a 2D unit pretty darn good.  I've never had a problem finding fish.  With the new electronics, it's almost to the point where you can pick the size of the fish you want to catch.  Why fish in a school of small fish if you can motor around and find a school of larger fish just by looking at the screen.  If you search around on the web, some of the images that people have posted are just astounding.  The depth and clarity you can get once you tune the unit right is absolutely ridiculous.

This post was under the rods, reels, line etc. section, so for that category it's nanotechnology.  For everything else side imaging is the clear winner.  The system was used to find the Titanic and now it's on bass boats.  Amazing.
