dockman Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 I was just curious if anyone has a good recommendation for a bait that resembles a small bluegill. I've been fishing this lake and the bass have serious lock jaw until I get bored and fish for the little bluegills. When I catch these little ones I have to reel in extremely fast otherwise the bass will nail 'em. It's fun to watch but I'm trying to stray from live bait. Any suggestions? Quote

WanderLust Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Lucky Craft Pointer 78 & 100 in blue gill are one of my favorite baits. Or A Kopper Live Target Blue Gill crank *WARNING* Also attracts serious Northern Pike. But I like those too. Quote

Super User 5bass Posted October 14, 2010 Super User Posted October 14, 2010 I'd give one of these a try ---->http://www.cabelas.com/fryprod-0/product--Bagley-Small-Fry-Bream--702268.uts.shtml And, as mentioned before, MattLures makes a fine bluegill. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted October 14, 2010 Super User Posted October 14, 2010 I have used both Tru-Tungsten and Mattlures. I've caught bass on both but prefer Mattlures. I sold my Tru-Tungsten. Quote

bigredxlt Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 I know I know they are all pretty awesome (thats an understatement) but I just have a hard time swallowing that PRICE!!! I have jumped in, and climbed some trees for rapalas I dont even want to know what I would do if I had one of those 50-80 dollar guys break off. :D Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted October 14, 2010 Super User Posted October 14, 2010 I'm looking forward to the day that I buy a larger rod to throw swimbaits on. I've been wanting to get my hands on one of those Mattlures Red-Eared sunfish for a while. Quote

Super User Bassn Blvd Posted October 14, 2010 Super User Posted October 14, 2010 I liked the soft body over the hard body but that's just my preference. And that's why I went with Mattlures. If those bass are targeting your live gills then I suggest putting a live one out and hold on. If you're really against the live bait, which would be beyond me, then there are a ton of different types of tackle you can use without spending big money. You may have to entice the bass a little more into hitting but keep at it. Quote
bryand82487 Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 I just bought one so I can't speak to whether or not it catches fish but the Jackall Giron in bluegill pattern is a good looking small blue gill bait. Take a look at it. A little cheaper as well. Anyone have experience with these? http://www.***.com/Jackall_Giron/descpage-JG.html Quote
ROCbass Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 I've used the storm wildeye live sunfish 3" with success. They aren't the best soft swimbaits out there, and can be difficult to get to run straight, but they will still catch fish. If you don't have the rod or the budget to throw the larger swimbaits, these are a decent option, and at 4-5 bucks for a three pack you can't go wrong IMO. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 I currently use a Sebile soft magic swimmer in the bluegill pattern- you can do many things with it, and can fish it weedless at that. I am looking to bump up though and try a couple matt lures- after reading this thread it really is a sick looking bait. If you are in decent cover- go with a sebile soft swimmer. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted October 14, 2010 Super User Posted October 14, 2010 As FBL stated, the Bagley Small-Fry Bream is a good bait to imitate smaller bluegill. I also use crankbaits in bluegill colors, Rat'l'traps with blue back over chrome, as well as spinnerbaits with blue/blue-green skirts. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted October 14, 2010 Super User Posted October 14, 2010 One of these Do you have the floater or the sinker? What kind of fish have you caught with it? I was just using the picture I posted to show a hard swim-bait in a bluegill color because it was on the computer, and i was too lazy to go on TW and find mine. I could never spend $80 on a swim bait. But i've caught some swimbait fish on a Reaction Strike Revolution Bluegill 3.5" in slow sink as I recently picked up the bluegill color to get into this swimbait craze. This is the one im using -->http://www.***.com/Reaction_Strike_Revolution_Bluegill_35/descpage-RSRBG.html#multiview Quote

I'll probably pick up a mid priced swimbait rod and use a low pro reel. Nothing crazy. Most of the better smaller hard bodies seem to be in the 2 ounce range. I'm not sure how comfortable I am throwing that on my MH flippin sticks that are only rated to 1 ounce. I'm sure they can handle it, but having the extra room is nice. Plus I want to step up to some of the 6" lures like the BBZ at some point. I think those are roughly 2.5 ounces. My paddletail rod aint going to sling something that size out. Quote
