Owasco Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 So I was doing some shore fishing yesterday at a local county owned lake. The day before I picked up a new spinner-bait Black bleeder with a single large gold Colorado blade. When I fish this small lake I like to stand on a stump about 4 feet above the water (allows me to cast various degrees covering alot of water as well as see subsurface). Anyway, on my first cast I got a hit. Set the hook and fought for a bit. I could see the fish as he just about broke the surface. He was a monster. Definitely the biggest bass I have ever seen, let alone hooked up to. Easily 2 feet as crazy as that might sound. My heart was racing. I climbed down from my perch on the stump to land him easier. As I was fighting with him all of a sudden the line got immensely lighter. I thought, "d**n, I lost him". :'( Then I realized that I still had a fish. The fish started skiing right toward me(I had to tighten up my drag as I was fighting a lunker). When I landed him, he was a solid 12 inches, maybe weighed a little over 1 pound. At first I was disappointed but when I looked a little closer at the fish I noticed he was all scratched and scarred up from just behind his gills all the way down his tail on both sides. I think what happened was I hooked into a LM that was being eaten by a lunker LM, and I won the fight. I have never experienced anything like that in all my life. I wish someone was there with me to have seen it. Now I know there are monsters in the lake willing to eat big bait. I'm going to get the canoe out there next time as the lake is only about 20 acres. Anyone ever experience anything like this before? Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 12, 2010 Super User Posted October 12, 2010 Wow , great story. I've never had that happen. Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Thats awsome and yeah wierdly enough thats happen i was at a pond that had a little shoot parrallel to it that was connected and i threw a 3/8 white spinner bait down it caught a little tiny fish probably no more than 1/2 a pound and got my line all stuck in the bushes and i was reeling it in and a fish came up grabbed it and snapped my line. Must of been frayed from being in the bushes but it was awsome to see it jump like that in only about 2 feet of water Quote
Owasco Posted October 12, 2010 Author Posted October 12, 2010 Bass eat other bass? :o Silly cannibals they are. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 12, 2010 Super User Posted October 12, 2010 Anyone ever experience anything like this before? Sure, except I land the big one. And the little one isn't actually alive ;D Quote
AndrewS Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 The is this lake near where I live that had bass like that. I would fish off a dock and these bass were smart, once you would catch a sunfish they would come out and kill it. It was fun to do it but i could never seem to get them to hist anything else but the live sunfish... those bass were easily over 6 pounds Quote
Owasco Posted October 12, 2010 Author Posted October 12, 2010 The thing that I thought was the most surprising was the sheer size of the bass he was eating. I've heard of bass eating things that are up to 1/2 of its size but this was incredible. The LM on my hook was a good 12 inches and a healthy 1-1.5 lbs. Thats not exactly small like bait. Thats a possible tournament keeper. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted October 12, 2010 Super User Posted October 12, 2010 A big bass will eat anything it feels it can swallow...they do make 13" swimbaits.. Quote
christopherjake Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Awesome experience. Wish you would have caught the monster! Quote
Owasco Posted October 12, 2010 Author Posted October 12, 2010 Awesome experience. Wish you would have caught the monster! That makes two of us. That would have been funny if I landed him without being hooked, just simply hanging on. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 12, 2010 Super User Posted October 12, 2010 You now know exactly where the big bass lives and what it likes to eat, go catch it. There are lots big baby bass pattern swimbaits on the market. Bass don't know there size verses prey size until they try to eat it. Sometimes you catch 2 bass on the same lure, this time it was a keeper and a big bass. WRB Quote
farmpond1 Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Sounds more likely that a pike or muskie tried to eat the bass. But I wasn't there. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted October 13, 2010 Super User Posted October 13, 2010 At a very small park pond, there was a guy and his g/f fishing for bluegills. The guy was talking to the park ranger, and within a couple of mins. gets a hit, he's reeling in the gill, and all of a sudden, his reel starts singin like crazy, he only has a light rig...so the ranger is watching this, as are we, and he finally lands the gill, witha 7.5lb lmb attached to it..The bass wasn't even hooked, just wouldn't let go. So he lips the bass, weighs is, and CPR..the ranger was amazed, as were the onlookers, needless to say the dude was pretty happy, not so much for the 6" bluegil..lol Quote
CAdeltaLipRipper Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Lol my dad told me that when i was little i was reeling in this little 6 inch bass and out of know where a 5 pounder came out and grabbed it and it ended up coming off Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted October 13, 2010 Super User Posted October 13, 2010 Awesome bait, Franco. To answer your question. YES, it has happened to me. I was fishing a rock pit with 15-20+' visibility. I had been catching decent fish all day and decided mix it up by using the u/l with #4 mono and a beetle spin (without the spinner)as a jig. I hooked into a little 6-10 ounce bass. I get this runt about 2-3 feet from the surface and that's when I see JAWS moving in for the kill. I nearly messed in my mess kit. I chose not to let JAWS eat because it would be a waste of time. It would have been instant pop off. I'm guessing JAWS was 10+. Quote

I fished my noontime spot last week. 14 fish in 45 minutes, none less than 2.5 lbs. Best went about 4. Quote
gobig Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 The smaller baits catch fish but what you will see with 8in + baits will blow your mind. Quote
Owasco Posted October 13, 2010 Author Posted October 13, 2010 Thanks for all the responses. There are some GREAT stories out there. Quote
