Blues19 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I go to Kentucky Lake in early June every year and we always do quite a bit of night fishing. Its been really good the past few years. A few years ago I did really well on a big black and purple single Colorado Spinner bait, but it has not worked since. We have done pretty well on full size brush hogs and Paca Craws too. Any other ideas? What do you all like to use a lot of? Im a little worried about using a jitterbug which I have heard is good, but dont like the idea of using it at night, to dangerous with three in the boat (and I'm usually in the middle). Thanks Quote

J. M. Richardson Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 any dark colored bait ( I like a black/blue flake worm). buzzbaits - black or other topwaters can be productive for me at times Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 29, 2009 Super User Posted March 29, 2009 Agree with the paca craw. Also like a rage craw,it moves a lot of water. As always experiment with the size of the sinker you are using. I also like to employ a brass sinker and glass bead with these at times for extra sound. A chatterbait is a standard night bait also.experiment with the retrive.Start by slow rolling the bottom along drop offs and over humps. I really fell in love with this worm last year.It is fantastic at night. http://www.gambler-lures.com/8paddletail.html You can really feel it thump coming through the water and the fish will readily hit it on a swimming type retrive also. For a good topwater I might suggest the new spro poppin bronzeye frog. You wouldn't really have to worry about throwing in a bad place or stickin it in your buddys skull when he decides to move as your swinging. At night use a hard downward pop or double pop and let it sit 10-30 seconds. Quote

Calcutta Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 My best luck at night lure has ben 1/2 oz. rattletrap. rip, pause, rip, pause, rip, pause. I guess the rip really makes it rattle then they always nail it on the pause. Quote

I would go with, it would work on a full moon beacuse of the light off the moons reflection, but to be honest with you the reason that the rat-l-trap works so well is the vibration the bass sense from the lure, so it really doesn't matter on a dark night. Super User Jeff H Posted March 30, 2009 Super User Posted March 30, 2009 Rapala's Original floater size 18 (7") in black/silver. Maybe down to size 13 in smallie territory. Vary retrieve from straight to rip to jerk or whatever. Might not work well with 3 in a boat to be flinging a bait with 3- #2 trebles on it, but they are night killers on the lakes I fish. Quote

Yeah I dont want to use a topwater even if they will work really well, its just to dangerous with 3 people in the boat. Safety first! Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 30, 2009 Super User Posted March 30, 2009 Jitterbugs, buzzbaits, black skirted colorado blade spinnerbait, and a far jig and pig with a rattle crawled through the shallows. Prop baits work good after dark too. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 No doubt - black/blue chatterbait. 1/4 to 3/8 oz for water 10' or less, 1/2 oz for anything deeper (haven't found any heavier than 1/2 oz). Anything from slow-rolling the bottom to reeling very fast near the surface. Quote

DINK WHISPERER Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 The very few times i have been night fishing i had tremendous success with a 10" Berkley Power worm in black with a glass rattle in it. Quote
river-rat Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 For most of my night fishng, I use a 5/8 spinnerbait w/black & Purple Skirt and add a purple #11 Pork Frog. As for plastics, I have come to depend on a T-rigged paddletail or gator tail type worm in black with a powder blue or pearl blue tail. As for the Rattle Trap, the tequila sunrise is hands down the best color I have ever used at night. Can't explain why. It just works Quote
Super User burleytog Posted April 4, 2009 Super User Posted April 4, 2009 Jig, 3/4 oz. spinnerbait, 1/2 oz. Pure Poison Quote
midnighthrasher Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Black jointed jitterbug....nothing compares Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 6, 2009 Super User Posted April 6, 2009 I prefer to fish a Sammy, Spook, or broken back Jitterbug, but a slow rolled Col. spinnerbait probably has accounted for the most fish. Quote
