Ima Bass Ninja Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Hello everyone!! Ok so i got a quick question not really a right or wrong just personal opinion. Me and a buddy were talking about the best way to fish with limited time say 4 hrs on the water. Of course we couldn't agree so we thought it would be fun to see how many people agreed with me and how many agreed with him. My side of things is that i prefer to fish with only one or two baits tied on and hit a lot of different areas without changing lures. His preference is to stay in one or two areas and try multiple lures..Which way do you like to spend on the water??? Quote
Uncle Leo Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 If I knew the water I would fish it like your bud, if not I would fish it like you. If you know the water you know the high percentage areas and there should be no need to change unless the Bass tell you differently. Than you can have your way! : Quote

kllrbee Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Had that situation today. I think I do a little bit of both. I will start off at a promising looking spot and fan out my casts with a particular lure changing retrives. I like to start with a spinnerbait. If that doesnt produce, I will change lures and do the same thing. After a few lure changes, I will move to another good looking spot and do the same thing. I havent timed it, but I would assume I spend about a half hour to an hour in each spot. Of course, I fish smaller lakes and am in a kayak, so it takes a little time getting from spot to spot. Also, obviously if the first spot produces, there is no need to move. As the old saying goes, "dont leave fish to find fish". BTW, I struck out today after hitting about 6 different spots. Not a good day, but still had fun paddling around in a new lake. ;D Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted September 16, 2010 Super User Posted September 16, 2010 Ill take your side. 1st I usually only get 2hrs if lucky 3hrs, 3-4 times a week so 4hrs would be like a vacation . I take one pole one lure and my bike to this 26acre lake. There are lots of nice spots but I try 5 or so and stay at each only about 20minutes 40 if catching them, hop on bike get to the next spot 200 yrds away and on the far back stretch of lake. The bike gets me to the better spots saving about 20 minutes over walking. Quote
bassmedic46 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I agree with you, Usually put one lure on and walk to each spot I want to fish. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 thanks for the replies guys!!!!! i guess i should give some details ,the lake we fish is fairly large (lake murray sc) and we both know it ok and have our spots but by no means do we know the entire lake... i think that's why i like moving cause i get to see different scenery... ..and again thanks for the posts keep 'em coming!! gobig Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I think aspects of what both of you said are right. If you have fished the lake before or have done a little bit of home work you should be able to have some fairly probable spots lined up. For me... I would have a minimum of 3 rods. The reason I say this is you need to find where the fish are active in the water column (top, middle or the bottom). I would preferably have 6 tied up with a faster moving bait and a slower moving bait for each part of the water column. If there are two of you fishing together you should be able to narrow it down in half the time if you work as a team. Now say its the middle of winter. I will still have a top water tied on but I will spend more time on more probable baits. Even though the general opinion is you need to fish deep this time of year you may get the surprise of your life. Once you determine where the fish are active you can narrow down your baits. How long I work an area is going to be determined by several factors. For instance If I am throwing an 8in swimbait in clear water fewer casts are needed. The size of the bait, high volume of water displacement and the high visibility will have a greater drawing power which will require less casts to effectively cover an area. Now say I am throwing a jig in stained water. More casts would be needed. The bait is smaller, displaces less water and is less visible. If I am in clear water with lots of cover more casts will be required than a barren clear deep water reservoir. Try to consider all factors your dealing with its going to vary from lake to lake and even location to location. Quote
