I bring them to the shore with enough slack to hold the pole towards the bottom and not put a nasty bend on the rod. I will then lip the fish...

Usually i just swing em up and lip them while in the air. If i can though, i'll lip them while they are still in the water, but since my canal has a seawall that is about 3 feet higher than the water, it's is not always possible lol. The only place i use a net is in my backyard and on a boat where im not really walking around. Otherwise, i don't feel like carrying a net when im beating the banks.

I just lift them out of the water into my hand unless they are over about two pounds and then I will just lip them in the water.

do you guys use nets when fishin from the bank?

If not, how do you land? Just curious.

1.- No

2.- I just pull it to the shore, leave enough line not to put a nasty bend on my rod and lip it.

when you get em to the bank, just walk backwards slowly and slide her out of the water and onto land then lip em, this way you don't have to bend the crap out of your rod

Thanks guys,

Only reason I ask is cuz the water is so much lower than the bank and the bank is on an incline.  Im trying not to put a nasty bend in the rod, but I also dont want to drag them onto the grass cuz I thought that was bad for the protective slime.

I figure Ill just hold the rod at about a 45 deg angle and leave just enough line out (should be about 4-5') so that she can stay in the water and Ill just get down on my knees and lip her while shes in the water.

Sorry for what might seem to be a dumb question.  But I just started fishing this year and Ive been fishing out a kayak since day one.  I just recently started walking over to the little pond by my house to fish from the bank.  Seems easier to land from a kayak cuz Im sitting right next to the water.   ;D

Thanks again.

If you can get it close enough and manageable you can grab the line and lift it to keep the load off the rod.

x2. at my lake the fishing piers have like 4' high rails (sucks to fish rod down techniques and there is no shore lol) but once i get his mouth out of the water i grab the line and pull him up, but make sure he's good and tired so he doesnt shake free.

That must be quite frighting when you catch anything bigger than 2 pounds.  :o

once theyre at the shoreline , i will use the line to lift their mouth out of the water and lip 'em. never had a net and i dont really fish from anywhere that has an elevated shoreline like canals.

Its quite frightening all the time. I got a solid 4 pounder there a couple weeks ago and was very cautious lifting him out, even with 65lb braid. I've actually broke a rod there by attempting to fish a suspending jerkbait and snapped my rod on the railing. Good thing it was only a $30 Lightning rod ::)

At some point, you'll realize how useful a long handled net would be. ;)

If it's braid don't grab the line, you can cut yourself.  When we catch smaller snook at the inlet, 7-8 # and less we spring them up with the rod, it's about a 10' drop.  You can't spring them directly from the water but if we can get them to a ledge springing is pretty easy. When I get a large one just crawl down to waters level.

I'm with Raul on this one.  The less clutter, the better.
