airborne_angler Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 I got this map awhile ago and wanted to know if anyone experienced with reading lake maps could analyze/dissect this map for me. What are your first impressions of this lake just by scoping out the map. What are some areas on the map to focus on when trying to find fish in this lake. First impression I get is that its deep, and has lots of very vertical drops all around. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 18, 2010 Super User Posted August 18, 2010 Don't know if this helped but I circled all the places I would hit IMO Quote
airborne_angler Posted August 18, 2010 Author Posted August 18, 2010 That helps alot(Thanks) some of those spots are just choked with dense milfoil, which makes it that much more difficult. Quote
bigtimfish Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Can't tell from the map, but do any of those coves have creeks that feed into the lake? If so that's where I would start. Find a grass line along a creek channel and you will find fish. Fish accordingly to whatever depth you are in. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted August 19, 2010 Super User Posted August 19, 2010 That looks very similar to the lake I'm on. Lots of very sharp drops. You've got lots of options there. You can run a c-rig up and down some of the drops. Do the same with a t-rig or a jig. Put the boat shallow and cast deep. Gently work it back to you so you don't get hung on some of the outcroppings. Try to key in on the irregularities on the shoreline. Most of the time, the contour under the water will follow the shoreline. A lot will also depend on the weather that day. If you've got some wind, fish the windblown side of the lake. Bait will usually congregate in the windy areas. Plankton gets blown up, little fish eat the plankton, etc etc. I'd toss a spinnerbait or a swim jig in that situation. That could also be a productive lake for a drop shot or a split shot rig. Make sure you've got a decent understanding of your electronics to pinpoint bass holding structure in the deeper areas. If some of those spots are covered in milfoil, look for those spots that have milfoil and another type of grass mixed in with it. Bass will key in on different bottom types and intersections. Usually if you've got two different types of grass, the bottom underneath is may have a subtle difference. Quote
SDoolittle Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Dude, I grew up fishing that very lake. Unfortunately, I haven't been there in probably 25 years, and I can't really help you out as far as where to fish. I remember it was choked with vegetation back then too. Are you stationed at Ft Huachuca? Quote
airborne_angler Posted August 20, 2010 Author Posted August 20, 2010 Im not stationed at Ft Huachuca I grew up in Sierra Vista and thats where I currently reside. So it was choked with vegetation way back then too? No doubt theres some good spots to fish, but the vegetation makes it tough and very discouraging. My TM gets fouled up like you wouldnt believe on this lake.No outboards over 8hp are allowed on this lake. River Rat316 Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 How deep is the weed edge? I would stick to the coves and various main lake points. Like said before look for intersecting weeds, and also pay attention to the inside turns right along the weed edge, find one mixed with rock and weeds and your golden! Quote
bass or bass ? Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 All Arizona lakes are actually reservoirs, and consequently quite deep. At it's deepest Parker Canyon is actually about 1/2 the depth of most lakes here. I've never fished there, a little too far for me to travel. I'd fish it like the lakes in the Phoenix area, the back ends of coves, cliff faces on turns, flats, creek channels, and the feeder river/creek. Quote
Syppy Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 LOL, the map and the name didn't even spark my memory until you guys started talking about it. I didn't remember the name out there. I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca a few years ago, and I know I fished there once or twice, but darned if I couldn't remember a thing about it. Good times... Good times. Quote
