airborne_angler Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Was watching the Fish Warrior last night and the host on the show was catching Nile Perch. To me at first glance they look like HUGE largemouth Bass. Wonder if theres any long distance relation between this fish and a LMB. Take a look at the pics for your self: http://www.google.com/images?q=nile+perch&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=bhBoTJ7QOo-8sQOyqt3UDQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CDAQsAQwAA&biw=1034&bih=650 Thoughts?? Super User BASSclary Posted August 15, 2010 Super User Posted August 15, 2010 Perch and other fish are actually in the Bass family, while ironicaly Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, and Rock Bass are in the sunfish family :-? Go figure... Quote
Scorcher214 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Thoughts?? I'm getting hungry... X2, like pieces of candy! Quote

ShaneK1990 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Omg dude you wont believe this but I was watching that show the other night and actually googled it too cus the one he caught looked EXACTLY like a bass. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 16, 2010 Super User Posted August 16, 2010 There all related there inbred. ;D Quote
NateFollmer Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 He should leave the real fishing to Jeremy Wade... I saw the Nile Perch on River Monster's awhile ago and did think they kind of looked more like a LMB than a perch. Like Bassclary said though, they are from the same family so they will have some resemblance. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted August 16, 2010 Super User Posted August 16, 2010 If somebody told me they ate grass carp, I'd be all in for planting them here. Quote
tritz18 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Yeah when i first saw them the same exact though went through my head. wow they would be fun to catch Quote

airborne_angler Posted August 17, 2010 Author Posted August 17, 2010 Lately theres been a few good shows dealing with huge fish. I dont know how much more one can show than the other. They all seem to always profile the same fish. River Monsters: http://animal.discovery.com/tv/river-monsters/ Fish Warrior: http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/fish-warrior Man vs Fish: http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-schedules/series.html?paid=1.14710.25883.36553.x Monster Fish: http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/monster-fish/all/Overview Hooked: http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/hooked/all/Overview Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 17, 2010 Super User Posted August 17, 2010 Perch and other fish are actually in the Bass family, while ironicaly Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, and Rock Bass are in the sunfish family :-? Go figure... Yellow perch belong to the family Percidae, which also includes walleye, sauger and darters. White perch belong to the temperate bass family, Percichthyidae, which also includes white bass and stripers. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are part of the sunfish family, Centrachidae, which includes bluegill, pumpinseeds, rock bass, and pygmy sunfishes. The Nile Perch is from the family Latidae. They are closely related to the Australian Barramundi. All of the above belong to the order Perciformes, or perch like fishes. Most fish belong to this order. Quote
FivePoundBluegill Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 hahahaha i saw that episode and show for the first time a few days ago that guys suck a dork he cant fish worth crap I happen to like "Fish Warrior". You have to understand that the guy is going around the world targeting exotic species that are seldom fished for so no one really knows what is best to do. A lot of the species he targets are rare too so they are hard to find. I am willing to bet you, me, or anyone on this site could catch the fish he catches under the conditions and in the time frame he does it. To be honest the only fishing shows I watch are Fish Warrior, River Monsters, Hooked, City Limits, The Hunt for Big Fish and the reason is because these shows are different to most fishing shows on TV. I personally happen to find most fishing shows boring now adays. Most fishing shows like Bill Dance or Jimmy Houston (not flaming the shows they are just the first that came to mind) are just some Pro Angler fishing and giving tips. A lot of the shows contain the same material. They are great for anglers just starting out with bass fishing. I used to love Bill Dance because his show taught me a lot as a teenager but now its just boring to me. I have to admit though... the "Fish Warrior" himself is a little annoying. Quote

0119 Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 To me it just looks like the Discovery family of channels has discovered Larry Dahlbergs show was on. Instead of signing him up for an hour show they get all these guys. Funny a channel that touts conservation and they have guys who dont know how to treat fish. On the Lau-Lau and Nile Perch shows he leaves the fish out of water and runs the boat down river to release it on shore for better camera shots, risking the fishes life. Quote
husonfirst Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Didn't he kill the first nile perch he caught by fighting it to exhaustion? River Monsters is too sensationalistic. He makes it seem like the fish are all great white sharks. These are freshwater fish for christ sakes. They may be big and nasty but still. Quote

I just watched the one on demonfish and instead of giving the underprivileged and 3rd world country-ish village a giant fish to eat. He want's to release it. Seriously Wade? Quote
