I was out fishing last night and pulled in 8 bass. Very good for what is usually the slow season around here.

Got 6 of them on a Rapala Skitterpop. Every one caught on the Skitterpop was foul hooked outside the mouth. What's with that? Were they going to swallow and changed their mind at the last minute? Were they attacking the bait with no plans of eating it?

Anyway I found it interesting to say the least.

I'm not sure anyone (other than the fish) could really tell you what was going on, although some may try.  I will only offer my guess.

It could have been that there was something about your lure that was "just a little off" - it could have been the shade of color or maybe they wanted blue sparkles instead of green.  But as long as you were snaggin 'em it really wouldn't make sense to tinker too much with your lure.

Another possibility may have been that you were retrieving it a little faster than they wanted.  Hard to tell.

The main thing to keep in mind though is you were on fish and they were interested enough in your presentation that you were able to catch 'em.  That is something that doesn't always happen.

I know that sometimes bass will hit their pray in order to stun it, but they won't eat it just then. When they do this they don't hit it with their mouth, they hit with their head. This could have been what was happening because it seems odd that you caught six fish outside the mouth.

how big were they? smaller fish will slap at the lure i snaged manny smallies that try to ingulf my lure but once they try the lures too big for there mouth so they just slap it..... sunnies also do this to me, and if the fish were bigger they must have slaped the lure because once they reached it they lost intrest

They were a mix. 3 were pretty small. Under 10 inches. The other 3 ranged from about a pound to 3lbs.

The one's I caught usually (85-90 percent anyway) had the belly hook in their mouth and the rear hook would be fouled either in the gill or back. The only thing I could think of is they went after the lure at the belly, swiped and missed and caught the rear hook on the side of the mouth.

Which hook did they fould on?

I think most of them had the belly hook stuck in their gills or outside of their mouth.
