So tomorrow night me and my old man are going out to do some night fishing.  We'll mainly be focusing on catfish and crappie.  My question is what's the best way to keep the bugs away?  Of course we'll have bug spray, but we have a lantern that we take on the boat that attracts the bugs like crazy.  Any ideas of ways to keep the light but lose the bugs.

Get a few of ThermaCell® Mosquito Repellent, you will still have bugs but not so bad that you can not fish.

X2

I take them hunting with me and never have problems with bugs.

Citronella candles in the drink holders, and lots of spray with DEET.

Themacells are the way to go but you do have to stay kind of put for them to be affective and low wind

Is your lantern gas or battery/electric? If it's battery powered you can go to a large music store like Guitar Center and in the sound/lighting department ask for some amber colored spotlight gels.

these are transparent colored film that is used to make colored stage lighting. Line the inside of your battery powered lantern with them and this will reduce the number of insects significantly. If it's gas powered you can not use them as they will catch fire.

Berkley® Floating Light simple yet effetive ;)

Oh my word, if you find a way to make this work, let me know. I fish Wylie at night at times and the anchor light alone is enough to get the motor (and anyone fishing in back) covered in bugs. At night I keep that on plus a LED solar light I keep on deck to really light up the boat.

It is horrible with the insects. I would love to find a good way to keep them off.

Eat enough garlic so it sweats out of your pores!!!

My grandfather actually wore garlic around his neck to keep the little buggers away. My wife uses the chopped garlic in the big jars and i told her not to throw away the juice when the jar is empty. I also told her to save the juice from the hot pickles/japeno's too. I figure the garlic and sweet/hot pepper juice is for bug spray and scent.

One of my buddy's uses the cloth you put with your clothes in the dryer, i think its the anti static cloth it drives the bugs away too.

Went last night with the ThermaCell and it worked great.  Sure we sprayed down with some Off bug spray too, but we sat the Thermacell on the row between us in the jon boat.  The bugs flew around the night lights on the boat but didn't bother us much at all.  We also had the floating light in the water which pulled some bugs away as well.  Thanks guys.

Mosquitos ---> no problem, Off keeps them away

Jejenes ---> get yourself full body armor.

In addition to the thermacell, those Off units w/ the little fans help.

I do the same thing as Turkey hunting, take my bud billy...only problem w/ that is I have to listen to him gripin' about the bugs eating him...

I just had a conversation with someone who mentioned this very tactic.

Bounce dryer sheets rubbed on your skin to keep the no-seeums at bay. I guess I've heard of starnger things - just can't remember when.    :o
