Probably a pike.Where did the line break? With braid it usualy doesnt break it gets worn down from long use and stuff so it usually just like pulls apart

If it was a pike, you'd more than likely see some frying where the tooth hit. I've never had a pike cut me off that quick though, it usually takes a few good rubs on a tooth to cut the line. Maybe the knots coming untied. I usually leave a little more tag end than normal when I tie straight to braid because some knots tend to 'slip' a little more until they tighten down.

It sounds like line slippage to me. Usually you'll at least get a couple headshakes from a pike before they saw you off, and the line will be frayed.

Give the Double Palomar a shot next time. Just make two overhand wraps with the loop instead of one, before passing the loop over the lure.

What the OP describes sounds more like what happens with a pike biting off mono or fluoro, not braid.  Could be a pike, but I'd be suspicious of the knot.  Here's a test, tie your knot to a hook, set your drag properly, and loop the hook around an immobile object.  Give it a test hookset.  Report back.

Could be either I guess.

I've had a few surgical cuts on pike hits though. I fish braid almost exclusively and I can tie a pretty good knot. :)

Oh, I wasn't saying a pike couldn't make a clean cut, but I doubt it would happen every time. I've seen some pike and muskie got through 60 lb braid like it was nothing.

I've had more pike and pickerel biteoffs than I care to think about and many of them have been instantaneous, with braid, with mono, by bigger fish and by hammer handles.

However, I'd follow earlier advice and check your knot before drawing any conclusions.

My guess it's pike. I fish where there are ALOT of pike. I have 50lb power pro on my frog rod. More often than not the pike cut the braid like Sharp scissors, and no resistance felt. I always hope they choke to death on my spro frogs.

i fish in a place where tiger musky used to be stocked, i've never caught one from there but a couple times a season my rod almost bends in half and before i can even set the hook the line is snapped.  i've had a few on my line that i've seen but they always take my lures before i can get them. i think more than likely your line is already going to be brushed up agains't their teeth and it's a quick cut from there

Ive had pike cut through my mono before. Never braid. Once was using a split shot rig with a culprit worm. I felt a tug and set the hook...nothing. When i reeled it in, the curly tail had been bitten off! Threw out a new worm and 2 casts later, another hit then nothing. this time he took the whole worm...and hook. I've also lost a few cranks and various other soft plastics to pike. I despise them.

Im thinking it was a pike. The lake has a very high number of northerns in it. Also i set hook on many fish in a given week and this only happens once in a blue moon. The input from you guys has been great!

Great knot, But here's what I'm thinking. If you fold braid it holds that shape, so if you tie a knot and it slips your line will have some sign of that memory. This line was straight no evidence of creasing. Just a thought

My guess is a poorly tied knot.....it happens.  If I remember my freshwater fishing correctly the teeth on a pike have some spacing between them, not like a mackerel which has shorter sharp teeth all right next to each other and cut offs are common even with braid.

I don't often use a palomar knot, it's a good one, I use an ordinary clinch knot and singe the tag end putting a little nib on it, this reduces the chance of pull thrus.

No, if the line slips through the knot, it will pull any kinks out easily.  Braided line has low memory.

Yes braided line has low memory, don't think memory was the right word i was looking for but i will be using the double palomar knot from now on...thanks

Braid is yarn, low memory, no curl when it breaks. Super Braids have Teflon coating and a Palomar knot can slip if you don't double loop it; use the knots recommended by the line mfr.

The larger the hook wire is, the easier the knot can slip and after awhile it can loosen.

Pike and musky can misjudge the lure and sometimes the line get across the mouth and all those teeth.
