Super User bilgerat Posted July 28, 2010 Super User Posted July 28, 2010 Is it me or is it getting more ridiculous ? The trash I come across at my favorite spots is out of hand. The icing on the cake is that there are trash cans available at the majority of the lakes I fish. Even if they're not, it's still no excuse. I hate to be negative, but there are a lot of scumbags out there. Perhaps a $5 deposit on styrofoam bait containers and beer cans would go a long way toward helping clean up the mess. Or just shoot the ignorant b*stards and be done with it > Quote
Chris W. Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I agree. I especially hate seeing yards and yards of discarded fishing line everywhere. Or worm containers, syrrofoam, beer cans, lure boxes, etc. I always pick up my line if its longer than an inch or two, those pieces usually fall and i can't find them. Quote
Shane Procell Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I couldn't agree more. The launch I use is on the line between two governing bodies. So neither does any trash pickup. I have been stareing at this growing pile of trash for over 10 years. Every client I have ever taken in from this launch has made a negative comment on it. I couldn't take it anymore so i made up my mind that I would clean it up. I spent 2 1/2 hours filling 5 fifty-five gallon drums from the pile and had it all ***** and span. The other day I get out there and some jackarses had already started throwing trash back in the same spot. I just don't understand how fisherman can just toss crap out on the ground. Most of the trash consisted of beer bottles, so maybe they are too drunk to care. Quote
Blue Streak Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 It seems to be getting worse every year. Not just around the places we fish but in the homes of the careless pigs that seem to want to turn every place into a filthy, littered hole. Quote
Teaburner Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 It's bad everywhere. There is a lake at a state park that I fish, and last time I was there pretty much every good spot to fish from the bank had an empty nightcrawler container or beer can. Most within ten feet of a trash can. Some people just don't get it. Quote
Gorgebassman Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I dont know about the rest of you but now days I carry trashbags with me all the time it may be no fun picking up after others but I would rather take a minute and pick it up than see a goose or some other bird tangled in fishing line. I will say that if I see someone throw down trash I do go out of my way to make them look like a idiot. In most cases I walk up and say here is a trash bag for your garbage I like my river banks to be clean. They often get a guilty look on there faces and thank me. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 29, 2010 Super User Posted July 29, 2010 Some of the lakes I fish are quite rural, fortunately not many people goes there, but my everyday lake, son of a gun, can 't them danged people walk 20 yards to the nearest goddam trash bin ? ( there are several along the shore ), dang ! , it 's friggin 60 gal steel drum painted bright orange, how you can 't see it ?!?!?! > I too take plastic bags and pick others trash, it ain 't purty and if it were for me I would go on the hunt of the trash ofender and shove his trash up his rear end. > Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 29, 2010 Super User Posted July 29, 2010 Alright...seriously...Carry a trash bag, I do. You aren't going to tame the pigs, but you can still make it more pleasant for yourself. Pick up the trash...That's all... Pick up the trash and fish. 8-) Quote
bass or bass ? Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 You wouldn't believe the garbage dump the Arizona desert has become because of the illegal aliens! Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 29, 2010 Super User Posted July 29, 2010 I try and pick up as much as I can and throw it away, but what's taking the cake for me is the used diapers at spots on the otherside of the beach area! I refuse to pick them up! I have 2 kids of my own that are now older. Been there done that. Yes, it's gotten worse than I can remember. Quote
grayAG Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I always carry a bag too. The last time I went out was about a week after the Fourth of July and I picked up a bunch of sparklers and other fireworks that someone had dumped in the pond. > Quote
NateFollmer Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I try and pick up as much trash as possible while fishing. You know what else I hate... People dumping their deer hides and bones in the freakin' river! That stuff gets stuck on the bridges and stinks like you wouldn't believe (I counted 20 one day just at the bridge alone... that's PA for ya!). I realize most people aren't fishing in the middle of winter but I still do so keep your deers out of the water, put them in the hide bins along the roads or make a coat! HA Sorry, I hate litter.... flipin4bass Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 If we can fund sex education and other off-the-wall education in schools, then I don't see why we can't teach our kids how to take care of the planet. You got to start somewhere. Quote

You got to start somewhere. When I was a kid in grade school, which was many years ago, they preached to us "do not litter" and it is worse now than it has ever been. When was the last time you saw a Woodsy Owl commercial? "Give a hoot, don't pollute" I haven't shore fished since I got a boat, but the river system I fish has signs on every bridge you go underneath that say "No Glass". The bridge I-beams are completly covered with beer bottles. On a brighter note, the other day I was heading into the launch and there were a bunch of plastic bags that had blown into the water. 3 pleasure boats stopped and picked the bags up. I read on another forum about legislation to make bait containers biodegradable. The consumer would be charged additional money for the box of worms. I don't use live bait so I wouldn't be affected. I'll see if I can find the info. Quote
Nine Miler Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Do like we do on the golf course. Fix your own ball mark, and a few more left by others. Its all you can do. Same with the trash. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 30, 2010 Super User Posted July 30, 2010 The ultimate I've seen in litter was on Pickwick, during the road trip. It was just after the monsoons hit that shut down Nashville, and portions of the interstate. It wasn't just from fishermen, it was every bottle, piece of paper or styrofoam that was on the beach or who knows how far from the shoreline. Sticks, logs, jugs, seat cushions, you name it it was everywhere. I've seen the devastation in the wakes of more than a few hurricanes around here, but they left nothing like the flotsam and jetsam after those rains of Biblical proportions passed through that area.
