Super User bigbill Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 Yup how late towards the fall/winter do you still fish? I was out in november with it snowing throwing a minnowbait and using a dying minnow presentation when i hooked into something really big.(jerk/pause letting it come up and swim down again) I use a HD bass rod 6'6'' and it had my rod almost in half. Even the cars going by were slowing up watching me fight this fish. It got off before i ever got to see it but it proves we can still fish late in the season before the ice is on. I guess there still looking for there last easy meal. Any thoughts on late season bass fishing? Now i have lost so many big fish i bumped up my line size. I'm using 14# test for my topwater stuff were i was using 8# test before. I hope using the heavier line isn't ruining my fishing. Lately i'm just on catching the fish i once was and i'm not sure why. Could line diameter affect your fishing? Quote

Super User Gatorbassman Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 I broke ice with my boat this winter and caught a few. Quote
kms399 Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I fish till duck hunting starts. I may get out on a friday night but for the most part rods come out and the blind goes on the boat. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 When ice chases me off the lake, I hit the ditches for cold steel. Once the ice melts, I'm on the water again Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 I fish right up to hard water then head south where ice isn't a problem. Quote
Hook Set Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 All year, doesn't get too bad here in southern VA. I too, have been known to break ice to fish. We catch big ones here on jigs in the winter. Quote

Super User Goose52 Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 Year around in Tennessee. In fact, January generally produces the biggest smallmouth of the year! 8-) Hmmm - not necessarily year round up on the Cumberland plateau in Tennessee as evidenced by the photo taken this past January ;D Anyway, I fish when the water isn't hard. My lakes iced over, then thawed, 3 times this past winter. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 All year round. I am lucky enough to live close to a lake that was developed for a nuclear power plant. Even in the dead of winter I have seen water temps as high as 67 to 70 degrees and some have said it even gets warmer than that. Quote
Blue Streak Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I fish as long as I can, at least until the weather gets bad and stays that way. It gets pretty cold here in the winter. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 From Jan 1st all the way down to December 31st. Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted July 24, 2010 Super User Posted July 24, 2010 From ice out till ice up................then it's onto the ice, yes you can catch bass through the ice. Quote
bass or bass ? Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Year round, although I prefer fall, winter, spring. Summer is just too freakin' hot!! I only do night fishing anymore in the summer. 110 to 118 daytime degrees is more than I can handle anymore. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted July 24, 2010 Super User Posted July 24, 2010 March 1st when the first cooling lake opens here in northern IL until Thanksgiving give or take. That's about the time the ice starts forming. Quote
