rowyourboat Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 i know the topwater bite is fun, but if you are in a tournament, do you fish the top water bite? in my mind top water bites occur less often and have a lower landing percentage.... what are your thoughts? Quote
LilJakeC1 Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Why would you take the chance of not catching some of the fish in an area just because you are afraid of missing some. You don't miss all the fish that strike topwaters. If you do miss one then just throw a senko to the spot that you missed it and 90% of the time you will catch it. Quote
gobig Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Many tournaments are won on top water. Especially frogs. Quote
SGT Rico Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 My day starts and ends with top water. When anglers miss a bite throwing top water, its mainly operator error for not "feeling the fish" before setting the hook. While every body else is off the water during mid day eating chicken in their boats, I am out there ripping buzzbaits and toads and catching fish Quote
Hook Set Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I fish topwater in tournaments at least until the sun pops over the trees, on cloudy days, I keep it in the mix all day. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 I've won 3-4 night tournaments on buzz baits and several day tournaments in the shallow marshes of Southwest Louisiana with a Spoon-N-Chunk. Quote

Top water has yielded a lot of wins in tournaments at my local lake and across the country for ages, Why would you not use it? I know people who think that same thing about the lower landing percentage but as for me it was only due to the fact that I reacted too quickly to the strike and did not feel the fish before setting the hook. I think top water should be one of the first things out of your arsenal of weapons that you use for the day. Quote
Olebiker Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I'm fishing a tournament on Lake Jackson here in Tallahassee tomorrow. I expect to throw a Zoom Horny Toad most of the day. The lake is shallow and almost covered in vegetation. Quote
