burce Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 My last 2 bass (my PB 6lber and a 5lber tonight) were caught off of reaction strikes. The 6lber hit right as my popper hit the water in the late evening, and tonight the 5lber hit right when my weightless trigged space monkey hit the water during sunset Anyone else get a the majority of their bass like this? Sure seems to be common for me now edit* meh, figured I'd show a couple pics of the girl I caught tonight since I wasn't planning on making a new thread for it 20in length, 13.5in girth - this site estimates it just over 5lbs. I'd say it's more like 4.5ish. Pics don't do her justice though, she was pretty fat Quote
Super User islandbass Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 Do you define a reaction strike to be the immediate taking of you lure as soon as it hits the water? If so, I would have to say not as often as I would like. In a sense, depending on how it's defined every strike is a reaction strike, because the fish is reacting in a way to accept your offer. Putting silliness aside, I don't really know how others define it, but I picture it to be when they take your lure out of reflex, instinct, or territoriality vs. taking a lure because they are hungry. And that is hard to know for me since most of my strikes/takes are received sight unseen. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 All strikes are "reaction" strikes...bass sees lure...bass reacts to lure Quote
burce Posted July 16, 2010 Author Posted July 16, 2010 All strikes are "reaction" strikes...bass sees lure...bass reacts to lure Jeeze guys you're killin me haha. I specifically mean the bass hitting your lure right as it hits the water *cast, lure hits water* bass: OmGWTFAtTaCK!!!!! me: win 8-) Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 I would define the vast majority of strikes this time of year as "feeding bites", not "reaction bites" as most people define them. 8-) Quote
Senkoman12 Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 most of the time, strikes with fast moving baits, (cranks, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, etc.) are reaction strikes, the bass just thinks what flew past him and hits it because its their instinct Quote
Gangley Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 in spring and early summer most of my hits are reaction hits. Right now though, I am not getting any reaction hits. I am mainly fishing worms and jigs, with the occasional chatter bait, spinner bait, or crank. Every fish I have caught off of the CB, SB, or Cranks lately have been trailing trailing the lure from a distance before striking, in which case I don't consider that a reaction strike. From early spring to early summer, and through fall as well, the fish hit those three lures hard and fast, and generally from short distances. That's what I consider a reaction strike. However, in summer (right now) i usually have to coerce them into taking a lure, and reaction strikes are few and far between. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 All strikes are "reaction" strikes...bass sees lure...bass reacts to lure Man, you beat me to it. ;D Quote
oteymc Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 It doesn't happen very often to me - as far as a fish hitting the lure right away when the lure hits the water, or before it hits the bottom. Maybe once per trip. It is fun when it does happen. Got one last night like that. Quote
HuntFishAK Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Happens to me quite a bit. A cuple times with a buzz frog, as soon as I engaged the reel the fish hit. I'm just waiting for a fish to hit BEFORE I engage the reel. That'll suck. Quote
Gangley Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I have had fish hit my lure before it hits the water, but that has only happened a couple times and usually with a Horny Toad. I previously made multiple casts to a spot, and I am assuming the bass knew it was coming. As the frog was falling, and about an inch above the water, the bass exploded on it right before it landed. 417Bass Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 i would say overall 5-10% of all my catches are reaction strikes..but it can vary greatly depending on where and when im fishing. Quote
brushhoggin Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 if a certain percentage of strikes are called reaction strikes, what is the remaining percentage of strikes called, enticed strikes? Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 All strikes are "reaction" strikes...bass sees lure...bass reacts to lure Man, you beat me to it. ;D X3 Often, bass hitting baits as they land are due to the fact that they can see the lures in the air, and move to intercept them. I've seen this a lot. Quote
avid Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 If it's a fast moving bait = reaction It it's slow moving = feeding Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 17, 2010 Super User Posted July 17, 2010 If it's a fast moving bait = reaction It it's slow moving = feeding So I guess while ole billy bigmouths out chasing shad, herring, trout or bream it aint cause he's hungry? Or how about the bass hitting some thing out of curiosity...seen that one many times & weren't my lure! Quote
burce Posted July 17, 2010 Author Posted July 17, 2010 Jeeze this really turned into a discussion on my wording haha Quote
Boogey Man Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 In clear water I'll cast right to the heart any cover such as a stump or patch of vegetation. I don't want the fish getting a long look at my lure as reel it up to the target. I guess that's what I consider more of reaction strike. Put it right in his nose and don't give him time to think about it Quote
