helms83 Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 The weather broke a little today. It's actually raining and cooler. Generally, how is fishing while there is a light rain during the summer time? I'm hoping to go out this evening, as I'll be unable to fish for a long time, but I work 14-16 hour days and don't really want to waste my time if it turns the fishing off. Any insight would be great, thanks. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted July 13, 2010 Super User Posted July 13, 2010 Ask Big O. He took our soldiers fishing on Pickwick in May during a inland hurricane! About 18" of rain over a two day period. As I recall, they caught a couple... : Quote

D4u2s0t Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 if you don't get out much, any chance to be on the water is not a waste of time! I've had many good days in the rain. Quote
moundhill Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 I don't think the rain affects the fish much, i was on the lake yesterday and was catching just as many in the rain as i was in the sun. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted July 13, 2010 Super User Posted July 13, 2010 Pre-frontal fishing, and fishing in the rain have been good to me. Fishing after the rain can be iffy though. We didn't have rain here for 3 weeks and had a front start to come through Saturday night. On Saturday - I caught 39 bass (a PB [by FAR] for me in these lakes). Fishing in off-and-on rain on Sunday, I caught 21 bass. After the rain stopped, yesterday (Monday) I caught ONE bass. Same lakes, same places, same presentations... Quote
Shad_Master Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Don't you know fish don't like to get wet? Seriously dude, fishing in the rain can be some of the best fishing there is. Quote
tanner Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 so here is a question. if you fish in the rain do you use deeper diving swim baits and plastics? it seems that since bass find food by sensing disturbances in the water all the rain hitting the surface would almost cause them to go insaine. or would they come up more looking for stuff that falls out of trees and shrubs and maybe pull a trick worm around just under the surface? Super User K_Mac Posted July 13, 2010 Super User Posted July 13, 2010 I would far rather fish in a light rain than on a 90+ bluebird day. That has as much to do with heat as it does with fish. As far as lure selection some kind of moving bait, like a buzzbait, or chatterbait would be my first choices. You can not go wrong with jigs and plastics either. Just like any other day you have to let the fish tell you what they want. Good luck. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 13, 2010 Super User Posted July 13, 2010 Lousy fishing weather: Little wind Poor or non existant cloud cover Temperatures in the 80+ Lake at full pool Great fishing weather Slightly windy Very cloudy or rainy Temperatures below 80- Lake at half pool. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted July 13, 2010 Super User Posted July 13, 2010 There to me is no better time on the water fishing than in the rain. If I am not mistaken the rain hitting the water not only cools the temp a bit but it helps to create oxygen and will make for some exciting fishing opportunities! Quote
Fat-G Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Black buzzbaits along weedlines and wood cover can be killer. I like to use black when it's raining or overcast, it always gets more bites for me. Swimbaits also work well. Quote
helms83 Posted July 13, 2010 Author Posted July 13, 2010 Thanks fellas, you guys have me wanting to leave work now and hit the water! I'm excited to see what happens. I'm going to try all of what you guys said, and see if anything works. It's been a rough summer for me on the water. Now that I think about it, the only good day WAS when it rained. And then after the rain stopped, and the sun was out for an hour, the bite was gone. I usually work from 0500 to 1800-1900. But we're in the middle of preping to go to training for all of August. Next time I can get on the lake will be September. Then around winter it'll be a year of no fishing. I got to get the casts in while I can. Thanks for all the insight! Quote

Super User bigbill Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 Fishing in the light rain is awesome but the heavy rain can stirr up too much bacteria and change the PH of the water for a few days. There's a pro and con to fishing in the rain. But i have seen bass catching frenzy's prefrontal, during the light rain and when the rain lets up for a while between rain storms. I think overall its the low light situation that causes the bass to feed more. The weather front also triggers something in there bodies too so they put the feed bag on. I have hit this frenzy a few times now and i have caught weird colored fish during this time too. They look like white/pink sunfish/crappies. Others that i have met fishing have caught these white/pink fish too. I have no clue as to what they are. I'm thinking its the frontal plus the moon phases that can cause this feeding frenzy I hit sometimes but not as often as i would like to see. I just can't nail it down as to when it happens. Its probably more complicated than i'm thinking it is. One time fishing from one spot from shore i caught 19 bass back to back. Another time i probably caught about 50lbs of bass, i lost count as to how many bass i caught. Another time me and my son caught doubles for an hour on mepps inline spinners. The inline spinners like mepps and joesfly's seem to be the best lures during this time with cranks second a close second. I swear the fishing is so hot a bare hook would work too. It can be non stop fishing, a bass per cast. My older brother always told me to stay going and the fish will turn on sooner or later, he was right. Quote
Sam Bass Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 The fish are already wet Just kidding depends how cold it is Quote
