bwillis Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 So yesterday I was fishing down at the river, after about 15 minutes, I went to step down off a rock, my foot slipped, and I landed hard on the side of my right foot. I went to the VA Urgent Care, turns out there was no fracture, just a sprain, but it got me wondering, have any of you guys hurt yourselves fishing (other than hooking yourself and things like that)? Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 30, 2010 Super User Posted June 30, 2010 I've gotten some serious sun burns while fishing. It was a matter of there being enough of a breeze to where I wasn't uncomfortable while I was on the water. There was beer involved as well. All I know is that it was a couple of days before I felt better. Back in the day when I was a bank fisherman, I fell a few times and got some serious bruises that hurt for a while. Quote
hmongkidBee Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Oh man I've got a funny one to tell about me getting hurt. It was during the bluegill spawn and we spotted bass staying close to shore in the back of the lake. The problem was that there were big trees in our paths and we had to climb on top of this tree limb that was about 2 feet in the air. If you slipped or something then you're going into the water. Anyways I pitched my lure to try to get the bass to bite and as he hit my lure I set the hook and lost my balance. Now I tried to run to the left of the tree limb to regain my balance, but it got worst. I slipped and fell into the water and got my wallet, shoes, jean, and my tacklebox all wet. It was hilarious, but d**n it hurts so bad though. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 30, 2010 Super User Posted June 30, 2010 Yep, many times.....injured myself in January still very sore. Quote
Diablos Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Most of the time it involves whacking my shins while launching or retrieving my boat. Quote
0119 Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 I have a buddy who tripped walking on boulders used to shoulder a bridge. He fell over the seawall the water about 10ft. down. Tide was out water was only about 5ft deep. He busted a couple ribs and got some stitches over his eye. Worst part he's 80 years old. He busted his Shimano V rod and his Ardent baitcaster. Ive got to give it to Ardent, they replaced the reel no cost when he sent it in for repair not expecting a replacement. Quote
Deb Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Tore a tendon in my elbow setting the hook in a 7#9oz largemouth. Finally had it repaired two years later....spent 10 weeks in a cast from my fingertips to my shoulder Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 30, 2010 Super User Posted June 30, 2010 Years ago I stepped on a rock and it rolled over. My right knee came down on another rock and hurt like the devil. I ended up having a hole in my knee about 1/2 inch wide that they couldn't stitch up because it was round, and my knee cap was fractured like a windshield. It was OK around the edges, but busted up in the center. It took about two weeks for the swelling to go down enough to where I could bend it and put weight on it. Quote
Shane Procell Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Oh boy this brings up bad memories.... Hooked into a xxl black drum at port canaveral. The rod was in a pvc holder wedged into the jetty bolders. It got hit and was headed into the inlet, I made a run to grab it and broke my foot when I got caught in between the jetty boulders. The worst part of it was working on a drilling rig in the gulf and when I showed up for duty they sent me back home till I healed up so I lost allot of $ over the ordeal. Second accident was fishing a swordfish tournament off miami beach. I accidentially put a 8" slice in my leg with a new fillet knife. The muscle was showing. I opted to tape it up instead of getting stitches. Left a hideous scar. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 30, 2010 Super User Posted June 30, 2010 About 8 weeks ago I damaged a nerve in my finger setting the hook on a jig fish. Still bothers me. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Caught a tree bass about ten feet up. Yanked hard instead of trolling over to get it out, dead branch that came out with it left a good welt. More embarresing than painful, especially when i saw three other boats watching. Quote
Fishing Cowgirl Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 I was bank fishing at East Lake Toho on a day that was too windy to take the boat out. So I was flipping some grass near the jettys. I'd caught a couple of decent fish, then I saw my line moving. I took up the slack....felt some good resistance...lowered the rod tip.... put one foot forward to get ready for a good hookset....and my foot ended up on an algea covered cement slab... whoosh!! Right leg forward..left leg back..doing splits like I hadn't done since High School a few decades back and slid all the way into the water with my rod held over head! The bad thing was, it was well witnessed by about 8 people taking a stroll down the jetty and the fish spit out the bait. I was VERY sore and bruised on my tail bone from hitting every slab before hitting water. Quote
Nibbles Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 Back when I caught my first flathead catfish, I didn't know they could sting. I still have a nice fat scar on the back of my hand from that incident. Quote
basser223 Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 spiked by a perch, cut by fire line and my dad got bit by a pickerel. Quote
Big Tom Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Dang. I haven't been hurt as bad as some of you guys. I guess I am lucky because I am pretty clumsy. Quote
Hornytoad 10 Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 I got a SHARP VMC treble hook stuck in the muscle of my forearm. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 3, 2010 Super User Posted July 3, 2010 Yep, and it occurred on the road trip to Pickwick. I was doing 40 - 45 mph, and had a cooler in front of the console. The lid ripped off the cooler, sailed over the console and whacked me right on the tip of my nose. I managed to trap the lid against my face, so it didn't fly off the boat, throttled back, set the lid on the deck of the cockpit, and pinched my nose to staunch the flow of blood that was pouring from it. Bassin Sergeant, who was with me, dipped a towel into the cold water in the cooler, and I applied it to my nose. We resumed speed, and headed to the next fishing spot. By the time we got there, the bleeding had just about stopped, so it didn't interfere with the fishing. Didn't hurt much that day, or the next. When I got home, it started to swell, so I had it checked. Not broken, but a cellulitis (skin infection) had resulted. A regimen of antibiotics knocked that down. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 4, 2010 Super User Posted July 4, 2010 Of course. Had to have treble hook removed from finger via surgery. Removed another treble hook from thumb myself. Fell out of the boat in driveway. Hurt shoulder pulling boat into position in yard. Hurt elbow trying to wrench boat tighter while on trailer in yard. I know, not too bright but things happen. Quote
lmoore Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 With the hooks and knives and all that stuff usually in a boat, it's hard not to get hurt at some point. My most embarassing moment was this spring fishing from shore with a bass jig. Set the hook on nothing and brought a 3/8 oz jig up out of the water. Gracefully ducked underneath of it, or so i thought. Took it right off the temple. Stood up to see a family walking by on the trail laughing. Pride hurt a lot worse than my temple. Quote
DaveT63 Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 About 2 weeks ago I was fishing from shore when I stepped into a shallow depression and turned my ankle pretty good 3 days before my wedding. I had to limp down the aisle. My lovely bride was not very amused. Quote
Syppy Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Actually haven't had a lot of injuries to my self, but I've seen my share of them. My Grandpa got the end of his tongue bitten off when he absent mindedly stuck a small barracuda in his mouth head first to free up his hands to work on something. And a friend of mine got a hook stuck in the center of his foot while we were fishing barefoot at the top of a cliff at a scout camp. My only really bad injury was that I threaded a hook through the side of my hand. Was easy enough to cut the barb and back it up, but wow it was hard to think straight enough to move the hook around to cut the barb off. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted July 6, 2010 Super User Posted July 6, 2010 Hurt my shoulder in Brazil last November. just this month it was finally feeling much better. Quote
Scruffy Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I was tying on a swim bait, I forget the brand. Its the type of swim bait with the big hook sticking out of its back? Anyway, I got to my favorite spot and I was tying it on and I slipped while typing it and I sliced my thumb open. I was concerned I was going to need stitches and I didn't have any band aids. I walked all the way back to where I was parked, almost a mile, and got in my car and got home and cleaned up. I was there for 10 minutes, caught no fish, and had a nice little gouge in my thumb for a while. Fun day. Quote
