Topwater on cloudy days ?

Does topwater lures ever produce well on cloudy days with variable winds ? Been getting alot of rain lately too, but couldn't get a single bite this weekend on top water, where I usally tear'em up. Not sure it the storm system/low presure has to do with it or if top water is left better for calm bright sunny days ? any input or advice ? -Thanks

x2. Cloudy with slight wind to breAk up the surface. I usually use a white or black skirted buzzbait with a single gold blade. Bass loves golddddd.

x3 cloudy days rule. Sunny days are the pits for topwater unless you are fishing the right kind of cover ie:cool shady spots under overhangs,lily pads.

except for using frogs/rats in lilly pads or slop, and with the exception of early mornings and evenings, about the only time I use a topwater is when it's overcast.  I rarely use topwaters on bright days in the summertime.  There are always exceptions but not many.

I agree with all the others.  I love it when it's cloudy & a little wind.  I don't really know if it's that the fish stay higher in the water column on cloudy, windy days or if they are just more actively feeding in those conditions but I'll always welcome clouds & wind.  But sometimes topwater just isn't what they want.  If you try a topwater & they're not hitting it then try switching to a spinnerbait fishing it fast right underneath the surface or something different.  Just because we think it's perfect top water conditions doesn't mean it is for the fish.

I like clouds because the fish will come out of cover a bit more to hit topwater. But the lakes i fish have heavy pad fields and they will hit topwater lures all day even when sunny in that stuff.

Topwaters work great on cloudy days. And over the years they've worked great for me on sunny days with blue skies. There's never a time I'll rule out topwater barring cold water in spring and fall.

There are no 100 percent truths when it comes to bass fishing. That’s been my experience. I have such a love/hate relationship with TOPWATER fishing. Big risk Big reward. Either I catch big ones or nothing. White skies you could say it would be harder for a fish to find a white bait or you could say the white skies will hide the fact that the bait is a lure and not an actual food…….Each body of water is different too. My home lake seems to produce a better TOPWATER bite with lots of sun due to the fish tend to stay deeper in the clear water so they can be drawn up with more visibility and they tend to hang out and hide in lay downs when it’s sunny. When it’s cloudy I feel like they are more free to roam and I have to cover a lot of water fast.

I always went by that cloudy overcast no bright sunlight no eyelids story with topwater but that got turned completely sideways a few trips ago. The day was intensely bright bluebird sky, just after a mild cold front with high pressure building, high noon and the topwater bite went totally ballistic! No just smallish fish but fish in the 7-8 pound range! And not just one, either. That scene completely shut down those notions that I hear so much about, like topwater fishing only good when it's overcast. Now I look for the opportunity just to be out there in ANY condition because I have caught great fish in the most unpredictable situations imaginable. I'm sure a lot of these sayings have merit; I'm just saying that I've seen great action on the complete opposite side of those sayings and for just about all of them.

Haven't seen it mentioned but I've caught top water fish at night, so heck ya on clouds or anything else. Old thread but still 100% relevant.
